Everything regarding the bad UI and such is not so much a 2000s era thing and more PS2 limitations. Making this mmo work on a console was stupid as hell in hindsight. FFXIV does all right but current consoles are far better then the ps2 :laffo:. And even then there is some jank in FFXIV because of PS3/PS4 limitations.

The base PS4 is adding less limitations than the craptops most people are playing XIV with. Having 8GB of unified RAM alone puts it ahead of most of that.

Bad MMO UI was also like, just a thing at that point (and largely still is). You only have to look at EQ and COX to see that. Having it on PS2 was the only way it was ever gonna gain traction in JPN at all, anyway.

eq1's UI is so loving miserable (as someone who has poked it recently) and i can only deal w/ XI's because i use the hotbar mod amongst other things, but i will defend CoX's UI as fine-ish.

Hot take I don't think the UI is bad. It works much better on a controller than XIV does.

:yosnice:

I wish Shantoto wasnt generally the only piece of FFXI that seems to be represented outside the game, though. I get in a game without a lot of particularly memorable NPCs why she's the de facto rep, but if they released figures of the generic character concept art for the artifact armors or figures of the arc angels I'd be all over those

Considering the only real competition in pre-Zilart NPCs is loving Trion, yeah...

That said, once they start digging into "We need more FF11 rep" after the obvious Prishe/Lilisette picks they get into some interesting choices. Joachim, Kupipi and Werei being in Brave Exvius is kind of hilarious to discover.

She's fun as a Trust and all but I mean... as far as story involvement goes, give me a reason to remember her outside of "The game is insisting I do so" because to this day I am still legit-rear end confused why Rise of the Zilart wants me to actually care about Lion. I cannot for the life of me remember how or why we got involved with her in the first place, it feels like she just showed up because we needed a prototype for Prishe and the other expansion deuteragonist girls.

I vaguely recall she saves us or futuregirl or both at some point, but wasn't the main hook that she was PirateKingMan's daughter and we had to help her early on? My memory of how it all originally played out is slightly askew as I came back and did a full playthrough of rhapsodies instead of the real story grind.

Lion, the ARKs, Prishe, Tenzen and they could always go the Monster Hunter route and sell stuff based on armor sets instead of characters. XI has a very unique/deliberate style to it they could get away with it.

I always thought whatever this series of artifact armor concept arts came from was cool and would work well as the basis for a run of figures

I loved FFXI’s armor designs. I really hate the floor-length robes of a lot of modern caster designs, and I really hate the big shoulder pads/big armor look that a lot of games have. FFXI armor always seemed really great, and often understated. Which makes sense considering a good chunk of them have been sitting in a box at the bottom of a cave for a long time.

I have a weird problem I cannot for the life of me figure out.

My wired XBox Controller has stopped working properly. No matter what I do, reboot the game, reboot the PC, reinstall the game, try to reconfigure the gamepad, all the button mapping is jacked up. Forward moves me backward, backward moves me forward, LB and RB navigate up and down menus, A, which is usually confirm, is now cancel, Y is now confirm. I have zero idea how to fix it. Any ideas?

EDIT: I sorta fixed it. Something's wrong with the XInput setting and it's somehow got which button is which all jacked up and I don't know how to fix it. Just tried to customize a different layout and it works. No force feedback though.

This is a more general tip, but I’ve found that if Steam is running it can try to hijack and reconfigure all your controllers. Some of that poo poo is useful, but I’ve had it create havoc when I’m not using it on purpose.

Probably not what’s happening, but that’s been my big controller issue recently.

Decided to come back but on a new character, because I was overwhelmed with all the inventory I'd have to sort through on my main. I've been having a blast just vibing out on a character starting from square one.

A quick question, though - how reasonable is it to solo or low man the ranks in ToAU and WotG? WotG in particular, every time I look at the campaign map it just looks like no one even bothers to do the content anymore (at least on Ragnarok). Does the WotG Shadow Lord fight just not become available anymore?

I know that the rewards from both of these contents are pretty useless aside from captain rank in Assault if I wanted to make a mythic for some reason, but I found myself wondering about these two in particular because I did them a lot when they were current.

I guess I had a similar question about Salvage. I know there's a newer level 99 version but is there a reason to do the 75 version alone or with a few buds?

You can do Assaults and Campaign solo though some Campaign bits are annoying without AOE and there's those few Assaults that REALLY loving SUCK and having another person along helps immensely (escorting the prisoner, orcicalcum survey, soup).

Campaign is almost solely for lockstyle piece so yeah it's pretty dead. Dunno if you could solo hard enough to make an impact? Probably possible but very grindy.

Mythics are still powerful enough to where it's not impossible to find someone willing to run assaults to help out. Salvage is useful for a handful of edge cases so they still are rarely ran, though 1) it's mostly trivial to solo at 99, and 2) it's super hard to get in to cus it's bottled to hell and back for farming alexandrite.

Haha yeah, I definitely remember my Assault static having to take a few tries at some of the early ones back in the day. I think we cleared Escort the Prisoner once to check it off then did other ones. I sorta remember one where you had to break down walls with explosives and another where you had to run around Ilrusi Atoll looking for some interactable. Fun times.

I've got a couple of buds playing so I figure once we're all capped out on our first jobs and scoop the rhapsody that lowers the tag cooldown we can blast through them, and if I can get them into salvage we'll give that a shot too.

Thanks for the replies!

So on a whim I picked up this game and have been enjoying myself. Started using windower to make stuff a little closer to ffxiv like i'm familiar with. But for some reason last night all my controller keybinds randomly swapped around. Have realised there is multiple configs in the us and eu folders but neither seem to actively stick when i set them up how I want it to be. Anyone encountered anything like this before? I'm using a ps5 controller through ds4windows if that helps at all.

Ds4windows totally hosed with my controller bindings with ffxi for some reason, using either ps4 or ps5 controllers. Try exiting out and seeing if that helps.
