Saw some thing were researchers are trying to develop "artificial photosynthesis" to produce fuel from the atmosphere. Turns out it works at a small scale, you shine sunlight at a panel and feed carbon dioxide and water in, it produces formic acid and oxygen out. You can then dump the acid into a fuel cell to get electricity. It's made of plastic and powdered semiconductor dopants, in gonna try and see if I can figure out how they're assembled and what horrifying drawbacks there may be. They were talking about using it to make phones and maybe cars you charge by leaving them in sunshine. E: the panel appears to be formed from semiconductor powder that's got embedded cobalt catalysts, dunno where I got the idea it was plastic E2: quote:Here we present a photocatalyst sheet that converts CO2 and H2O into formate and O2 as a potentially scalable technology for CO2 utilization. This technology integrates lanthanum- and rhodium-doped SrTiO3 (SrTiO3:La,Rh) and molybdenum-doped BiVO4 (BiVO4:Mo) light absorbers modified by phosphonated Co(II) bis(terpyridine) and RuO2 catalysts onto a gold layer. The monolithic device provides a solar-to-formate conversion efficiency of 0.08 ± 0.01% with a selectivity for formate of 97 ± 3%. As the device operates wirelessly and uses water as an electron donor, it offers a versatile strategy toward scalable and sustainable CO2 reduction using molecular-based hybrid photocatalysts. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41560-020-0678-6 Guess I'm not gonna be fabricating one of these any time soon I wanna know if it can absorb water and co2 directly outta the air or not, that'd be interesting SniperWoreConverse has issued a correction as of 09:35 on May 15, 2022 |

It's been said a million times but I can't believe how much of this poo poo is being designed with the idea of the status quo in mind. Everytime I am in a conversation with a group of people about electric cars and casually mention that I don't give a poo poo about EVs because individual car ownership should be illegal people look at me like I'm insane.

I keep thinking how rad it would be to be able to produce your own fuel and electricity in some kinda way. Plumb all your rain gutters to a picohydroelectric generator. Process grease into diesel. These weird experiments that synthesized fuel outta the atmosphere are cool, but because of capitalism it wouldn't slow fossil fuel use at all.

Since I basically only play green decks in MTG, a friend suggested a podcast called "Taps for a green", where I spend like 15 mins talking about the current state of MTG (legacy, arena historic) and how Elves is positioned now -- then go into fifteen minutes of PURE CLIMATE DOOM with a guest -- and then bring it home with a 5-10 minute discussion of maple sugaring and forestry. If anyone in this thread has any kind of actual academic background that would make you feel comfortable talking about CLIMATE DOOM as any kind of either "credentialed expert", "environmentally concerned industry expert", etc, hit me up. I think this idea has legs and the only thing that changes is the MTG meta, so i could pre-record the climate doom and forestry stuff and then shoot for biweekly episodes for a couple months and see if I can get traction. PM me. willing to offer .25% ownership stakes to my first 4 credentialed guests

More maple climate plastic doom content. I went and bought this evaporator and pan setup for $3000 used yesterday. To do so I rented a Dodge Ram 2500, which was depressingly fun to drive, and also I spent 70 bucks on gas for a 130 mile trip That is inded a piece of PVC. Designed to carry 90F sap from the preheater into the float pan. Woo! Also I am going to be spending about $500 on new plastic tubing (metallocene) which is theorhetically recyclable but only if I cut all my old poo poo up, cut the taps off, remove all the metal wires, etc. The taps are still trash no matter what. I am going to take the time to do that if and only if I can satisfy myself that the poo poo actually gets recycled in some meaningful way. When I was buying the thing I got into a conversation with the former owner about used vs new poo poo, the general direction of things, and while this guy did not seem full on whatever his reply was made me think "huh that's a pretty dark comment coming from the father of 3 little kids, so, this guy gets it. This guy fucks!" As far as metal restoration goes, the front of the arch looks a lot worse than it is (this is all surface rust) and I am going to town on the whole thing with a wire brush, and then stove paint, and then I will do some test boils to cook off the stove paint fumes, which I know from experience smells bad enough that it must be doing something super fuckin bad if you huff enough of it. People sometimes call this a "green" hobby. Lol, lmao. Yes, deliberately injuring trees, collecting their lifesap using disposable plastic lines (or, these days, plastic buckets if you are going the bucket route), and then evaporating to a factor of 50 by burning either wood or petro is super loving green. I'm gonna guess the motorcycle I just sold had a better environmental footprint than this poo poo does . Syrup is addicting though and so is the process. also I think big gently caress-you trucks like that should be illegal for normal people, not just because they are an environmental catastrophe but because the sensation of power they give you just lends itself to violent fantasy, and this is coming from someone who has routinely handled firearms with none of those thoughts. You just feel completely loving invincible and also like you could casually take out a group of 20 people and not notice. Passing a row of road bikers was somewhat scary, I waited until I could get one full lane between us, being not used to driving something nearly this wide.

If you can afford to own a tesla, depending on where you are you can probably also afford to not own a car and use generally less lovely options even if it's literally paying someone to Uber you to work. That Uber car is probably in use 50% of business hours at least. The amount of time cars just sit around doing nothing except occupying space is loving offensive and even if we were going to do the car culture thing, community hubs of shared vehicles seem a lot better to me as someone who needs a car based on total lack of public transit options but also would prefer to not own one. i'd love to take transit to work but it would take my commute from <15m to 1h15m with two transfers. that's not counting wait times, delays, etc - that's from bus stop to stop to stop to stop transit (or lack of) is a collective action problem so i don't blame individuals for doing the one small thing they can do by buying an electric car total cost of ownership for my elantra has been like ~350/mo maintenance/insurance/fuel and $200/mo for the car (assuming i get 11 years out of it, we're on year 9 now) and taking an uber just to commute would cost me 1200/mo
