What controllers are you using?

If you're playing handheld, try a Split Pad Pro. I find bigger sticks with more travel allow for better precision.

Finished Hedon! Writing needed a copyeditor but apart from that it was a really tasty game. I also blew through Severed Steel this morning, which isn't really an "early FPS" or intentionally mimicking that style, but still seems like it might be of interest to people ITT.

I have a bunch of other retro FPSes to try out from the same bundle I got Hedon in, though -- I've already played Dusk, and HROT and Dread Templar are both as yet unfinished, but apart from that I've got Project Warlock, Amid Evil, and Ion Fury waiting for me. (And Hellbound, but that looks like it's more modeled after Doom'16.) Plus the recent rec for Ashes 2063 and Ashes Afterglow TCs. Thoughts?

The Ashes games are absolutely fantastic. 2063 is like a single Doom episode proof-of-concept, while Afterglow expands on it with larger maps, hubs, and lots of stuff to do. Great atmosphere, a great arsenal (has anybody done an Ashes weapon set mod yet?) and awesome music. The "Dead Man Walking" episode for 2063 in Ashes Enriched is pretty good too, more of a combat-heavy thing but it's a good excuse to show off the arsenal.

Gyro for small movements and stick for large movements (looking angles over 30ish degrees) seems to be the sweet spot when it comes to FPS games.

I know it’s not an early FPS, but here’s a recent video showing it in Team Fortress 2.

Go to the release thread and look for "standalone weapons pack" under Downloads.

What do you all make of the Master Levels for DOOM II?

I've been slowly (re)playing the episodes in the DOOM unity ports in release order, and the Master Levels would come before TNT/Plutonia. That it's just a collection of PWADs with a menu instead of a campaign makes me think to just skip it.

They're a mixed bag for sure. Interesting if you really want a feel for that era of mapping though. BTW if you use JP LeBreton's WadSmoosh tool it can give you an episode-like runthrough of the master levels.

I’ve been doing the same thing over the last year and they’re definitely a low when it comes to official levels. Not as bad as I expected though. I think they’re worth playing through once.

Yeah, the character designs are easily the worst things about the otherwise fantastic game. I've heard a couple people mention that they won't buy the game because of how awkward would it feel to play a game that was clearly coded with one hand.

With a couple of exceptions, I thought most were really good. Or at least, good by the standards of when they came out.

Hey, to my knowledge the creators of Duke Nukem didn't wanna gently caress Duke, though if they did, more power to em.

Thanks to Duke 3D, there was a time in my formative years where I thought ladies' nipples were really long; it might have awakened something in me before I learned about nipple tassels, though I cannot say for certain.

The cocooned women are problematic though. Yes they're an obvious Aliens reference, but in Duke they're fairly exposed (and later, suggestive) and without the context of Aliens they're not a good look.

I know there's an option to turn off the "adult content" but that's like half the game. I wouldn't mind keeping the crass bits but turning off the rapey parts.

IIRC it's not really easy to make the Adult Content filter more granular because the code sucks. I know that Graf just threw the entire feature out when making Raze instead of trying to salvage it.

The Save The Babes mod for EDuke32 might make things a bit more comfortable by adding and expanding upon a gameplay mechanic from the N64 games.

Yeah I'm not playing on PC though. I'm playing on my famously-into-uncesnsored-content Nintendo.

Ask me about onklunk extraction.
The censorship on the N64 babes is funny because the hanging naked babe sprite got changed so that they were just torn in half with their spines exposed and breasts obscured, which I would argue is way more messed up but apparently it was good enough for Nintendo.

Decided to keep working through the bundle I got Hedon in and try out Ion Fury, and...I'm not really feeling it? It suffers from comparison to Hedon, I think. Yeah, the art is better, but the levels manage to be both smaller and harder to navigate somehow; they also look uglier, in large part due to massive overuse of Build's coloured lighting sectors, which give it an overall vibe akin to Descent source ports from ten years ago before the light channel blending bug was fixed. The enemies are basically all variations on Dude With Gun or Small Annoying Zoomy Thing and some of the weapons are gimmicky in a bad way (like the grenades that roll along the ground and thus can't be used on enemies standing at the top of the stairs, or the crossbow that one-shots humanoid enemies most of the time but sometimes randomly stuns them instead), although the akimbo incendiary SMGs are neat and the shotgun/grenade launcher and pistol are serviceable.

It also feels kind of like it's trying too hard to be a spiritual successor to Duke3d. Like, D3D started out with two small levels in a burned-out urban hellscape, so IF starts with five large ones and a bossfight; D3D had a protagonist that occasionally emitted action movie one-liners, so IF has one that has a line for every third kill and weapon pickup (mercifully, you can turn them off); D3D had some risqué content, so IF has sex and drug references on every wall and storefront. It also has a lot of graffiti referring to the LAPD as pigs despite being set in D.C., for some reason.

I might return to it later, but at the moment I'm thinking I'll probably put it down and try out either Project Warlock or Ashes 2063.

I'm working through the same bundle and went Hedon -> Ion Fury and had the exact same impressions. I've slogged through Ion Fury and you probably aren't missing much - a few new enemy types, a whole lot more industrial tunnels / sewers. It's a pity because there are moments where the art style combined with the tracker music gave a vibe of a lost Apogee shareware game. If they gave the game its own personality instead of emulating other Build games it could have really popped.

I had a lot of fun with Project Warlock, it's definitely worth trying out.

Ion Fury is shockingly boring imo. I played a few levels on switch and it’s dull as dishwater. The guns all have way too little ammo

I don't really care that much about what the developer draws elsewhere, but I don't think one type of fetishized body is inherently better or less objectified than another. Like if the guy jerks off to R Crumb-esque amazons that's not less objectifying than if he was jerking off to Lara Croft.
