I've always thought this was a beautiful strip. When I was a kid, I couldn't work out how he did it (I was a dumb kid), but as an adult I really appreciate the compositons he arranges to make the effect work.

How's Encyclopedia gonna get out of this one? Uh, by being dropped from the paper and replaced by Annie, apparently.
To be fair, the EB comic wasn't long for this world anyway - wiki says it ran until Sept 1980, and I'm posting mid-Dec 1979. I don't care enough to post Annie & all the other comics in this paper suck, so unless someone has a burning urge to see 70s Wizard of Id or Beetle Bailey, I guess I have one fewer comic to post.

I know you've only got so many panels to work with, but it feels like there should be a little more to this origin story. I do want to know its single weakness (And hope it's something equally dumb and direct, like "Being shot with a gun.")

Well originally he was just a wacky tertiary character and I guess they saw no reason to chance the design.

Wizard of Id is almost identical to modern Id. Beetle Bailey is a bit different but mostly in the form of more sexual harassment/"men be horndogs amirite" jokes and in the occasional attempt at stuff like this:
