I like them both! But one is set to music and the other isn't. It's a huge difference. They're comparable certainly but not the same.

the tone of the article, or at least of the tweet trying to get people to read the article, has a definite undercurrent of "author has nothing to talk about on dates or at parties and has decided this is everyone else's fault"

to put it in [Pop Culture] terms, y'know how in Oblivion if you let Martin Septim die you get a little dialog that says something about how like the thread of destiny has been severed, and there's no way to win, but you can keep playing if you really want to? It's something like "you may reload a save, or persist in the doomed world you have created"? About half of 2020 felt like that to me. The world was irreparably hosed and rapidly getting worse, there was no way to win, we had in fact already lost, but I wasn't dead and was just still playing in fail-state

Sorry if that's a bummer, but maintain your mental health C-SPAM, it's very important for your loved ones

You're thinking of Morrowind, quest-essential NPCs in Oblivion are literally unkillable without console commands lol

That said I still want to beat Oblivion someday, I like just loading it up and running around. That game's flaws have been discussed to death but that style of game still hasn't worn out its welcome with me.

I think the classic feminist explanation for these kinds of phenomena is that masculine fantasies are addressed sufficiently in popular culture while feminine ones are kept out via institutional barriers, so individual women are forced to project their fantasies onto their favored media themselves if they want to see them

but IMO it only really holds up in the 2020s if you include literal pornography in your analysis

At least 90% of "modern lit" novels are loving dogshit and in particular the award winning ones are usually the most insufferable garbage among them (how are Jonathan Franzen or Jennifer Egan still getting work??).

The best thing about reading old books is that the trash of its era tends to get filtered out through time (except Dickens, somehow), but that doesn't exactly keep the industry alive.

Anyway the reality is that novels, as an artistic medium of any real social impact, are dying/dead and that's okay  and I say that as someone who reads novels daily. Poetry died a long time ago and frankly I'm more sad about that

(though tangentially, written poetry is alive and well in, for example, the Arab world, it's just dead in the west. (and don't say rap is modern western poetry because it's a different medium entirely imo))

Poetry as we know it has a strong connection to lyricism and music so I don't think it's unfair to say it evolved into ballads and songs and such, but I do agree with you that I lament the loss of it as an art form in western culture

Elden Ring lore would probably be at least competitive with a lot of genre fiction, if the game bothered telling you any of it

video game writing is by and large not very good.

a couple games are standouts but it just has not historically been super common that companies that are capable of putting together video games are also able to put together high quality stories

probably as indie games continue to blow up and it gets even easier to make them + their audiences grow even larger we'll see some improvement. Like how disco elysium was essentially a text adventure that they gussied up in Unity

margit the fell omen is morgott. morgott is the king of leyendell. He's an Omen. Omens are creatures that are born with horns and are considered abominations. Morgott is able to be the king of leyendell because he hides the fact that he is an Omen. When he needs to act in the open, he calls himself Margit and pretends that he's not the king of leyendell

this is not told to you in game at any point

Looking cute, feeling cute.

Utter dogshit, and I love literary fiction, but also, you're complaining about your boyfriend reading Le Guin and Mieville. Not Asimov and GRRM, no, Le Guin and Mieville. Get over yourself. But also, love the part that wanders into claiming literature has always been the field of the feminine after going on about how men had too much of a voice in the field for awhile, well, which is it, men dominate this industry or women did, make up your mind. I love the thesis is basically, "It's good that men write less than women now, but also, men should read our novels more, all consumption, no competitive production." Complaining from an ivory tower and a half.
