even if you genuinely think 'Superman tries to stop a world built on slavery and violent exploitation despite not being a native of that world' is ~problematic~ it's literally not colonialist because that actually means something. He wasn't loving setting up ~earth values~ or whatever to exploit the resources and culture of Warworld he was saying 'it feels like a world built entirely around abducting people to fight to the death endlessly is a bad way to live'.

Also...you know Warworld isn't an actual world, right? It's Mongul's gladiator space station. There's no 'natives' he's exploiting/speaking over/whatever.

I think a lot of the sex scene discourse is a reaction to Euphoria, which is the only show I can think of right now that's both targeted at that age group and is also full of sex scenes. Of course, those sex scenes are plot relevant, and a bunch of different types of sex are portrayed and the *type* of sex portrayed is often plot relevant, so even I think McIntosh would be satisfied

To clarify, I'm not saying shows like these are a bad thing. It's more about the notion that if you think not every property needs to be an edgy 80s OVA, that's puritanism.

I wasn't thinking of Velma specifically when I said fetishized there. Either way, I rest my case.

A complaint I saw about Velma wasn't that it was fetishized, but that it was just another in a line of edgy animated sitcoms in the vein of Rick and Morty or Family Guy or whatnot. The issue wasn't that it was bad because it was edgy, though, but rather that it was another example of adult animation nowadays being mostly made up of this kind of thing. It's not puritanism, but rather burnout.

I was thinking a bit ago about something similar. How like "back in the daaaay" a lot of fandoms locked their smutty stuff behind private blogs, or 18+ LiveJournal groups/forums. But now thanks to everything concentrating on twitter, instagram, tumblr, tik tok, or AO3, and none of those websites having much in the way of filters separating kids who might not be interested in smut and adults talking about smut, especially in fandoms where the characters are under-aged, really leads to a nasty tension you just didn't bump into years ago.

It was dorky but it feels like there are definitely way less places where kids and teenagers can hang out on the internet and not have to step around things the Adult Internet has strewn everywhere. Can't even go relax and play some Meerca Chase on Neopets anymore since Flash is dead.

This resonates. It seems like every other discord about a game has an NSFW channel now, if not just "throw it in #general". I'm not a prude, I don't mind a porns or two, but it's very odd that even relatively kid-friendly titles (Nintendo ones, often) just roll that stuff right into the middle of their community.

Like for gently caress's sake, your Splatoon discord does not need a porn channel, keep it in your pants

but going "why does nobody think of the children" when joining fan communities is a bit out of touch.

I even agree that nsfw channels are way too common and weird to have on a discord, but I'm not sure there's a solution.

Um, pardon you, TMNT was violent edgy Frank Miller Daredevil parody in the 1980s. :colbert: In the 1990s it was basically like the cartoon and the Archie Comics series got... weird after a while.

Bit from 'So many innocent contractors were killed on the second Death Star' from Clerks here. (Which is funny because you get Empire stans using that and then forgetting that the question was answer in the same scene.)

Yes, I've heard modern scientists have recently come to the conclusion there's something about teenage biology that might make them horny, too.

I just think that there's a tension between teenagers having to share space with adult fans. Particularly when it is in fandoms with a lot of younger characters and watching the adults get thirsty over the characters that might be the same age as the real teenagers in the same discussion groups. Others don't care, sure. That's always been there. Still, there's fewer places to escape from that, if only by virtue of everyone concentrating on a handful massive social media sites.

And I don't know about a solution, either. It'd involve making a space for that, and clearly there's not much financial incentive. You can even see that in some of the retrospective videos from the younger twentysomethings that get posted here. 10/15/20 years ago kid-friendly social media sites would get set up by one corporation or another, then they all gradually lost income as kids stopped browsing the internet on home computers and swapped to phones, and then the websites died.

TBH it's kinda goofy to look at that exchange and read it as "think of the children!!!" pearl clutching instead of just, like, a statement of how things are.

I feel like the meme of people clutching pearls over children is brought up a lot more often than it's actually happening. Like, sometimes things are actually not set up great for kids, and it's something that deserves attention and discussion, instead of pretending like the existence of horniness in teenagers means that there's no problem in funneling them into the same place as weird horny adults.

Kids and adults are at different developmental and power places in their horny journey, and would be best served by having some sort of separation available.

(And of course everyone would be served by having a clearly marked Horny Containment Area: if you're not into horny, then you can easily avoid it; if you are into horny, you can get your freak on without worrying about prudish bystanders.)

There is plenty of precedent for the whole swing towards puritanism that is happening right now. We only need to look back to the 80s, when a bunch of the second-wave feminists joined with the Religious Right to attack stuff like Playboy and porn on VHS. And while Playboy/Penthouse/etc and 80s studio porn certainly had their problems, the only thing those second-wavers actually accomplished was giving more power to the forces that are today making it a crime to get an abortion or let a child transition.

There’s a reason Fox News is using the word “grooming” to describe any situation where queer people are simply existing in the presence of children, it’s because they know they can use the language that the new puritans are popularizing to push a right-wing social agenda. It’s the same playbook from 40 years ago, and it’s disappointing to see so many people fall for it.
