With regards to Turkish military competence - when they first got involved in Northern Syria they did very poorly. A lot of the military leadership and just a bunch of officers in general had been imprisoned following the attempted coup and it showed. Not Russia bad, but a lot of embarrassing moments and obviously poor tactics at the unit level leading to things like unsupported tanks getting ATGM'd left and right by the Kurds.

But they showed a lot of improvement over the course of that first year and a few years later they pretty handily steamrolled a portion of Kurdish territory and repelled several SAA attempts to attack into the Turkish backed areas.

Fast forward to 2020 and they absolutely dunked on a (up to that point very successful) major Russian supported SAA push into Idlib - including the first glimpse of their newly developed drone warfare capabilities stomping all over brand new Russian air defenses and Wagner troops.

I think a coup would sit poorly with the collective consciousness. "We rid ourselves of a monster," wouldn't be the history they could stomach.

"This very sick man, loved Russia with all his heart and made us stronger. Admittedly though, before he unexpectedly died, his big mistake was a symptom of his illness," would be a fiction easy to sell, easy to believe, and would play much better in their history books.

Could be that, could also be a cultural thing, I'm not sure. I know that at least Finnish (a close neighbor to Russia) has a passive listening culture. That basically means if you talk to us we will quietly stare at you and wont say anything until you are finished, then we respond. No uh-uhs, no nods, nothing.

The misunderstandings that can come from this are very real: In my university a professor told us in class that a foreign professor, either British or American, teached one semester, but went home before the semester was up because he thought nobody cared and the students were very rude. Apparently classes in the US or Britain express different body language in class, lmao. It is very demoralizing if the audience seems to not care at all. (I am pretty certain the audience was more excited than normal to receive a foreign professor and were staring even more silently than usual while they were lecturing.)

That being said, I would be uncomfortable as gently caress there. Also I do not know if Russian "listening culture" is at all similar to Finnish.

Yeah I always thought "Putler" was really an exaggeration, or people really having no idea how absolutely beyond comically evil Hitler was. I guess it's maybe accurate for like 1933-1940 Hitler, but so far Putin hasn't evolved into his "Final Solution Ultimate Evil" Hitler from, but rather he's so far just the generic run of the mill militaristic expansionary imperialist like so many 19th and early 20th century figures. Also, "Pussolini" sounds way better than "Putler".

They cannot easily pull back. Russian forces control or cover with artillery all river crossings and the city is on the east bank. They can probably get the personnel out but would have to abandon or destroy all but the lightest materiel. They had one crossing with some possibility of remaining viable but it was fired on by air and artillery this morning.

I think this will be either a brutal last stand + assault or a very heavy artillery pounding to force surrender/retreat. Only alternative is a Ukraine counterattack against the flanks of the attacking forces. Which is impossible unless Ukraine is lying about the 20:1 local vehicle advantage held by Russia here.

The battle for the city will suck and many will die on both sides. I hope this dumb war ends soon.
