BBC News reporting that the energy price cap is now to go up to £2,800 later this year.

I'm struggling and i'm on a decent salary. It is getting to the point where I am not sure if I will have enough coming in each month to pay the bills.

And now imagine how much worse a situation we'd be in if Jeremy Corbyn was Prime Minister & oversaw the antisemitic trope of nationalising the energy sector.

Thank God the sensibles will be in charge and will pass a bill for means tested energy tax credits.

Same. I'm already paying over £200 a month for gas and electric on a two bed flat. I don't know how much higher it can possibly go. Something's got to give.

Swing and a miss on the link.

The government is supposedly considering things like a social tariff for the most needy so I think their plan is to set up a hardship fund scheme which is immediately oversubscribed and a social energy tariff (subsidising the energy companies) for some small group of people which is a nightmare to apply for and then hoping that that causes just enough support and lack of solidarity amongst the public that it doesn't boil over.

Sorry I thought you were a landlord when I gave you your old avatar!
I've just looked at the current tariff for SSE Business (for our flats common parts - emergency lights, lift, mini-laundrette), we apparently have to be on business tariff even though we simply get peoples' maintenance payments in and pay out for communal repairs etc, we don't have any profit, just expenses!) Almost everyone in the majority of the flats is an over 80s widow on state pension only). (We, the leaseholders also own the freehold.)

Our fixed rate runs out in July - SSE current variable tariff raises the daily standing charge from 31.4p to an 101.46 (plus VAT I think) and doubles our day/night rate. Octopus seems to be offering significantly better business tariffs.

I can feel a day on the spreadsheets coming up!

Will have to convince the Old Timers that it is allowed to not have SSE! They've all stayed with them for historical reasons (all used to be SWALEC) and is now Ovo except me and one other whose daughter changed her supplier.

This must affect a lot of blocks of flats' common parts charges which will get passed on through service charges increases.

All they have to do is make it a benefit and every gammon oval office in England will simultaneously say the Tories have done enough to help and that nobody who is poor deserves it.

I can believe this. I've done the sums and I earn somewhere around the 60th percentile as a salary. It's now at the point where after essential bills and rent, etc that I am left with around £110 a month. Those bills do not include food. If the new limit comes in, that becomes £30 a month to survive.

And this is me earning more than 60% of the country.

I think we may have missed one of the meals toward the revolution and we are hurrying rapidly towards our second.

I've been thinking a bit about an interview Daniel Radcliffe gave many years ago where he mused that he'd recently been addressing huge crowds of adoring fans at an event in London and if at that moment he'd ordered them to march on the palace and install him as king they'd probably have done it.

Point being, whoever wants to be the next Lenin needs to get themselves into teen blockbusters.

I’ve not seen a single major org do anything to organise and inspire people more than just saying ‘oh dear, this won’t do’, and calling upon the government to realise how bad the energy crisis will be (which of course they already do, they just don’t give a poo poo). Surely some sort of bill payment strike is the only meaningful action the masses could take, however fantastical that may be to organise in this day and age?

I still believe that in 300 years a course on Western Political history in the early 21st century will begin with describing the various background topics that created a culture that could be primed for fascism, much like how the competing alliance networks, nascent nationalism, and imperialism finally running out of lands to conquer all formed the firewood that would burn in the Great War.

And then, just as the assassination of Franz Ferdinand was the match that set the 20th century ablaze, the course will recount that the spark that rekindled fascism in the 21st century was...a woman making a video game about depression. And so, the match that lit the tinder that created Donald Trump's Presidency in 2016 and the Hitlerbot War of 2054 was the question "Are video games art?"
