Is there a way to “stash” mods? Maybe a steam workshop feature? I fired up the game and apparently I had somehow subscribed to 200 mods so obviously it was completely broken with a new version.

My complaints about the trains feels like a missed limit code on their station stockpiles. The basic universal stockpile has limits, can store a bit of everything, your drones dont fill it up with too much of one thing and prevent other things going in. Great, nice, neat, ok for places you only want some repair materials on hand, but not a central stockpile. The stations will gladly fill up with eh what ever. I had one instantly fill with fuel after I built one and couldnt ship anything else, as it was Fuel 180/180 with no room for anything else. If the station only held 15 of each resource in the small station, 30 in the large, but it was segregated into separate limits, it would fix what complaints i have. As is now, its great for bulk shipping one resource, but kinda poo poo at multiple.

In typical paradox DLC fashion, trains have now moved from Positive -> Mixed -> Mostly Negative on Steam. I still may pick it up this weekend to use it for bulk transport of mining materials.

I’ve been playing a lot and it’s good for moving workers (perfect). With tech upgrades and Martianborns there is barley any downside Shuttles do goods better Pipes go over the lines so that’s nice .

The way trains handles goods is not all that great and fiddly. Honestly it's great for people transport between domes or domes and distant work locations (usually mines). In fact it's so good for reaching those locations that it does a lot to change the meta of the game. You do have to fiddle a lot with the inventory screen though to make sure the distant locales will export all produced goods back and only keep on hand the resources to repair/rebuild your mines.

Yes, in the case of a metal mine for example what I do is to set the dome side to send machine parts and whatever else is needed and the mine side to balance machine parts. If you leave both sides to balance nothing gets sent. Then set the mine side to send metals and waste rock. I think that the station interface and mechanics were originally designed with an actual train network in mind, and then that had to be cut. So now we have stuff designed for complex systems and network logic that's just being used for point to point transportation, which doesn't need all this extra complexity and suffers for it. It's still worth it to be able to mine remote deposits without building a whole dome and running life support all the way out to it.

Yeah it seems like the big stations were supposed to be the nodes and then you'd have them link to other large stations and single line end stops. The small stations are pretty much perfect for their purpose though. They move the workers and whatever it is you're mining on site back the other way, and you can just disable everything but the good you want to move back and use a small universal depot to store machine parts that's supplied by the flyers. Trains really do shake up the meta in a good way.

My trains experience is pretty limited, but it seems like you really need the fast train research to really use them. Sending trains into the next map sector took so long that people really did not want to work the mines. Once the transit time dropped to an hour it seemed to work much better. Really wish the train station could also act as a mini-drone hub to work the mines.

My longest rail took 1100 cement. Went from the south east corner to the north west. Some of my lines have had over 3000 trips. So they are very much worth the investment, if nothing else to keep your fuel for shuttle cargo runs. I got one station centralized that has automated stockpiles and all the rest feeding into that one. Running all my terraforming flights from there.

I talked really bullishly about playing with the trains this weekend, but I forgot that Overlord also came out today. Decisions… That’s really impressive with your rail line and seems like a much more organized layout than I normally have.

There is however a mod that adds a “hub” which lets you create a star topology of domes.

I'm on my very first colony. Made it through the first 10 sols, everybody alive, self-sustaining in food, oxygen, and water. Here's the catch: The only minable materials are way, way outside the range of my domes. What should I be doing, assuming that research and life support are ticking along normally? Invest in another dome that sits next to the rare minerals? Other?

Trains. No seriously: Trains. They let your workers commute to distant locations so you can place mines far away. The far deposits look a bit distant but you can likely get the near iron deposit. You could also eventually place a dome near that deposit and people will be commute between them. You may have to use a drone commander/transport to haul the resources out there at first.

I did a playthrough of a couple hundred sols worth of gameplay a little while after the dlc launched and everything worked fine. Trains make the game feel much more complete and have a great niche. The terraforming dlc is also very good.

Here's the catch: what sponsor are you playing with? do you have some way of generating income aside from exporting rare metal? the main thing you should be doing is ensuring you have a steady supply of fuel, metal, and rare metal to sustain continued growth. i prefer to pump groundwater into a bunch of fuel refineries if possible, but you're going to have to get along with vaporators. you need fuel to keep the rockets moving and exploring mars missions, and you also need fuel to manufacture polymer. surface metal will sustain you for a few dozen sols but eventually you'll need to mine it to keep up with machine parts production, which is your next significant bottleneck. and rare metals of course for export, with a little set aside for electronics manufacture. make sure to generate enough water to keep up your food production, farms are a good early research choice with all this in mind, you probably want to build another dome near to the metal and rare metal to the west. it will probably be outside of the range of your drone hub, if drone hubs have overlapping service areas you can daisy chain goods movement together but it is slow and i wouldn't trust it except to move goods between adjacent hubs. if you don't have some alternate form of immediate income, and most sponsors don't, then you'll need to set up an independent dome cluster between the western metal and rare metal deposits. importing stuff from earth will drain your funds quickly, and you want to keep machine parts production in mind to at least be self sustaining - windmills devour your stocks quickly with construction and maintenance needs you'll probably also want to get a transporter or one of the unique equivalents to move goods between the distant domes, primarily concrete Mr. Fall Down Terror fucked around with this message at 04:58 on May 24, 2022 |

Will colonists walk from dome to dome if they're within each others' radius, or must there be a passage built? I just realized I'd built one dome on the wrong side of another, and it's impossible to run a passage.

Arsenic Lupin posted:Will colonists walk from dome to dome if they're within each others' radius, or must there be a passage built? I just realized I'd built one dome on the wrong side of another, and it's impossible to run a passage. colonists can relocate between domes that are within walkable distance, but this is a full on move. likewise, new colonists on mars leaving a rocket to settle in a dome are constrained by a maximum walking distance. colonists will not visit adjacent domes without a passage. colonists also only travel only one passage away from their home dome. passages are thus required to link domes together for work or leisure purposes. outside workplaces within the radius of more than one dome can draw workers from all relevant domes i prefer to set up my domes in trios, so that linked together in a triangle, a colonist living in any of the domes can visit the other two domes, and to have more workers available for polymer factories and power plants

Arsenic Lupin posted:I'm on my very first colony. Made it through the first 10 sols, everybody alive, self-sustaining in food, oxygen, and water. Here's the catch: Congrats on your first colony! Some random thoughts on that start. Metal: - There is a ton of plain metal on the surface of mars, your transporter can bring that back to base and keep you going for a very long time. Build a dome in range of the deposit but don't waste your early colonist mining it unless you got really unlucky with the surface metal rng. Water: - The biggest problem you are going to have with that start is lack of groundwater. Pulling water from air takes a lot of power and space and if this map has dust storms, it's going to hurt. - You can build multiple extractors from 1 water deposit so a single deposit can run your base for quite awhile. - You need farms and polymers right away and those suck up tons of water. Imo that makes securing water job 1. Rare Metal: - Critical for mid-game, you need it to make electronics and revenue so you can keep research outsourcing up as much as possible. Early game, it's not so critical but nice to have. - Expand your colony to this deposit and enjoy those vista's as well to help boom your population. You can use your transport and mobile drone command to build a new drone hub/universal depot to establish a foothold, then call in the rockets. Be sure to build a trade launch pad, this will let you rather easily exchange concrete/metal surplus for things you are lacking like maybe food with other colonies. This is usually preferable to buying from earth. From your current start I'd pop a few domes up, connect with passages and use that metal to start churning out machine parts and excess food to support your expansion base to the west. Eventually you can link the bases with tunnels.

it should be a drop-in dlc since it doesn't overwrite or change anything. check the game dlc manager on steam to ensure it is installed? trains are thirsty for concrete, you'll probably need to build a couple of concrete extractors. i prefer to hook them up to a large solar panel and just turn them off at night, the 33% production hit is worth the lower maintenance cost for solar vs wind, or worse wasting a sterling generator on concrete extraction

I think it varies by building but yeah, maintenance is basically the same over time. The bar fills at a flat rate. Placing an outdoor building next to a dust producing one makes the timer tick up faster, same with dust storms. A Grand dust storm is basically your entire setup being hit by a god-sized sand-blaster for days. The Dust Repulsion upgrade on solar panels will make heal overnight. Tribolectric Scrubbers will heal anything in their range (including other scrubbers, but NOT themselves) but you might need an extra one covering buildings near extractors or if you have a lot of dust storms.
