And more importantly he's not going to gently caress around and make people start thinking we should have healthcare or any kind of social safety net.

Honestly there should just be a moratorium on reporting on school shootings for 24 hours. Everything they say is wrong. No body armor, no pursuit, grandma's still alive, etc.

It's always an AR platform. I think we'd go a long way toward fixing this problem if we limited the kind of guns we can buy to slow-to-reload, slow-to-fire weapons that still leave room for hunters. You aren't shooting up a school with a break action shotgun. Obviously that's impossible given the current political structure, because we can't even ban the type of receiver that is used in nearly every mass shooting because range lords think that their right to go shoot at paper targets at their buddy's acreage is sacrosanct and far above the rights of children to not be shot to death in their class room.

if you're shooting paper targets there's no difference between a bolt action .22LR and an AR-15. I have access to a shitload of family guns that belonged to my grandfather, but nobody has opened the safe in years because the little .22 is just fine to plink cans and shoot pieces of paper

Aw gee the poor guy

quote:

Valdez said Ramos drove around with another friend at night sometimes and shot at random people with a BB gun. He also egged people’s cars, Valdez said.

About a year ago, Ramos posted on social media photos of automatic rifles that “he would have on his wish list,” Valdez said. Four days ago, he posted images of two rifles he referred to as “my gun pics.”
....

Two months ago, he posted an Instagram story in which he screamed at his mother, who he said was trying to kick him out of their home, said Nadia Reyes, a high school classmate.

“He posted videos on his Instagram where the cops were there and he’d call his mom a b---- and say she wanted to kick him out,” Reyes said. “He’d be screaming and talking to his mom really aggressively.”
....

Reyes said she could recall about five times that Ramos had fistfights with peers in middle school and junior high. His friendships were short-lived, she said. Once, Ramos commented to a friend while playing basketball that the friend only wanted to join the Marines one day so he could kill people, Reyes said. The other boy, she added, ended the friendship on the spot.

The "lift up" thing here is signaling, because it's a term used almost exclusively by evangelical protestants. Can't wait for national politicians to start calling on God to "convict our hearts".

One of the biggest problems we have in addressing this issue is the fact that half of the country thinks we live in a fallen world, and that it's man's sin that causes things like mass shootings. So there's no argument you can present or data you can show that will move them an inch off their positions, because they believe in magic.

I think one of the confusing factors is that there are states with gun control laws that do actually have an effect, it's just that these people are enabled by the states that actively choose to have little to no gun control (Texas has chosen to have no gun control). Of the three mass shootings this month, there's this one in Texas, there was the one in New York where the shooter purchased his gun in New Hampshire, and there was one in California where the shooter was actually from Las Vegas and purchased his weapons there. You may also be less aware of the California church shooting because that shooter didn't have an AR, he had two 9mm pistols (and he made some bombs that apparently he didn't manage to use), and not only were they less effective as weapons, but even though the church didn't have security guards or police, there was a 52-year old doctor that managed to charge and stop the shooter.

So, if there could be some federal laws on gun control, that'd actually work. But Republicans love dead children, so they don't want people to get things done.

iirc the "correct" police response is essentially "No retreating or waiting for backup, grab whatever is readily available and go in immediately. Even if you get killed every minute that the shooter is shooting at you is a minute they aren't shooting at victims."

But despite all the posturing and tough talk police only want to play soldier when it is fun and don't want any of that pesky "in certain situations your life is expendable" stuff.

Well, yeah. That's not what cops are for. They're for protecting property and harassing undesirables, like poor minorities and the homeless.

One of my coworkers in IT used to be a cop in Texas. By his own admission, half of people are cops because they were losers in high school and want to power trip on the AUTHORITY. The other half of cops just want a stable well paying job with benefits and no education. But even those guys are assholes to because the nature of the job is at best writing tickets and at worst being a state sponsored rear end in a top hat. He quit once he earned his degree and switched to IT.

Re: AR Pattern rifle.

It's always a AR/AK pattern rifle with these assholes, El Paso, Buffalo and now Uvalde, an 18-21 year old buying one as their first gun. IMO, a red flag and not normal. (I don't know many people who buy one as their absolute first gun, it's usually a pistol or a small caliber rifle/22) .

Universal background checks is long overdue for private sales but the system/DROS needs to be severely upgraded. There should be a mental health database that operates on a federal level and it should include school incidents. I'd have restrictions on certain types of firearms broken up into additional classes which will require approval/training for an endorsement on some form of federals level gun permit/card.

I lived in a bunch of countries and states and currently in Round Rock but moving back to California this summer. I always thought it was crazy that in a private sale I can just go to any ol' HEB parking lot and buy something out of a trunk of a car and be on my way.
Not that's really the case with these mass shooting cases, they went to a normal FFL.
