So uh, Latvian populist MPs - think Gosar, Greene, Boebert, Cawthorn - wrote a petition against allowing the pride parade to happen this year, “arguing” that it’s necessary to prevent the spread of monkey pox.

The writing is incredibly amateur, borderline childish, and would fail writing requirements of a 5th grade essay in a generic Latvian school. For an example, let me translate a paragraph (the format for this one is that you state reasons, and then make a suggestion stemming out of your petition):

“Taking in consideration that according to World Health Organization (WHO) data the monkey pox has primarily affected men who have entered a homosexual relationship and those who have been for a visit to a medical institution specialising in STIs or urology (source: tvnet.lv);”

TVNet is a local tabloid, and the only source they quote - what is there to say about their actual “arguments” for their case. Or their proposed solution - “please ban pride parade, oh and also do other important things to prevent this disease from spreading here”. Or the prior beliefs of the signatories, such as one of them being outspoken critic of government implementing any whatsoever restrictions on gathering rights, explicitly including those steeped in public health concerns.

It’s utter farce. These people are actual morons, and it’s deeply embarrassing that our parliament has 10 people ready to sign on this monument to illiteracy.

“The time has come for my account [to shine] on Twitter. Ukrainian territorial defence (volunteer national guard) has weapons, but they lack transport. We’ve brought 9 cars to them already, but more are needed. Badly. And quickly.”

Here in Estonia our current PM has done bloody good work with this Ukraine war and banging the drums in EU over it. But surely we can't let it last.
Now the other party in the coalition came up with the bill to increase child support. Because that's in their party's program. They haven't discussed with their coalition partners what taxes need to be raised or what else needs to be cut to make it happen. But who cares about that, right.
When one has 1-2 children the money they receive will go up from 60 to 100€ per month. Those that have between 3 and 6 children will receive an additional 700€, with 7 and more it'll be additional 900€. Sure, we need more children. Then there's that other thing: anyone already qualifies for that money, even high income earners. When the cost of heating went up last winter, again: initial compensation was paid out universally. They could've saved millions by not compensating people like me, who make several times the national average.
At the same time, single parents are much worse off and nothing is done for them.

This will probably break the coalition and those populists will throw their lot in again with the conservative racists.

We've loads of other costs or obligations that now come up to bite us in the rear end:
1. Years of car-centric development, which has fooled people into thinking that they'll be driving their cars for barely any charge. Like USA, except our petrol now costs more than 2€ per litre.
2. There's public transport and a lot of it being free of charge. The state pays/paid various bus companies to operate the lines at a modest profit. Until the price of fuel went up. Sure, ridership is going up as well, also because less people want to drive but the companies won't make any additional ticket revenue off increased ridership. They do want the state to compensate for their losses and the state is trying to fight them.
3. University education is also free of charge, which is fine. But their funding as percentage of GDP has steadily gone down through the years so universities have started dropping some subjects (in Estonian) entirely. The unis can still charge foreign students so financially it makes more sense to teach more in English : P
4. The previous government also permitted people to withdraw from the state pension fund because as we all know, everyone makes a good investor if they only had money. So that further contributed to our inflation of 20%. Sure, the war also helped with that.

I think you guys might have a point there. I recall from earlier this year how I thought about the whole process of compensations when it first came up and how it could be automated with what I know to exist in the state's IT systems. I wasn't satisfied with the result that I came up with.

But it would actually be rather easy to automate granting fare-free public transport to the people who actually need it by combining information from different systems. Some of the more obvious conditions in the equation being either having a disability, being over/under of a certain age, being a conscript or being a student.

Going down that route leads to lots of administrative overhead while decreasing ridership of demographics that benefit the most from public transport.

Outside of metros that have enormous throughput public transport is rarely profitable without excluding vulnerable populations by raising ticket prices. It is folly to try and make it profitable when low fares lead to higher ridership, because the effects of increased mobility vastly outstrip possible revenues from fares. E.g. a single poor person being able to hold a job because public transport gets them to their workplace increases tax revenue by a multiple of what they could afford in fares.

Public transport is one area where you'd want to remove as much friction as possible. You just also need people who understand what an externality is in places of government.

:toot:

"" The court, when examining a corresponding application, shall establish whether the relations of the applicants are to be recognized as family relations within the meaning of Article 110 of the Satversme. ""

Looked up the Latvian Constitution.

The State shall protect and support marriage - a union between a man and a woman, the family, the rights of parents and rights of the child. The State shall provide special support to disabled children, children left without parental care or who have suffered from violence.

The court interpreted this as a bullet point list: -
: a union between a man and a woman,
: the family,
: the rights of parents and rights of the child.
: The State shall provide special support to disabled children,

With the first part being a description of "a" union, with "Family" being the keyword.

also: "" Examining the specific case, the court concluded that the state has still not fulfilled its obligation, namely, neither in the Law on Registration of Civil Status Acts nor in any other law has the legislator established the relevant legal regulation ""
(if you don't define it, you are making us do that)

It is a list of things, as you phrase it - the sentence would otherwise not make sense in Latvian. The clause is basically “the state shall protect institutions of marriage and family, and safeguard children from abuse”. Local conservatives are livid about this, want to rewrite this clause so that it explicitly defines a family as a union between a man and a woman.

And yeah this is piling on the back of a similar case before, where our constitutional court ruled that a lesbian partner of a mother is entitled to a “paternal” leave, with an additional explicit reminder that the government must protect every family. This was in late 2020, and then late year our supreme court did rule that until government issued a legislation covering homosexual relationships, courts have a right establish (declare) on their own the fact of a family relationship.

Fingers crossed our LGBT+ community won’t have to resort flying to Copenhagen for their wedding registration for much longer.

Which is extra funny because "between a man and a woman" part was shoehorned in there by conservatives back in 2005.

I never said that public transport has to be profitable nor that vulnerable populations have to pay for their rides. Companies wouldn't operate those lines otherwise and they need money from the state to do it. There are already limits to how much profit they are allowed to make.

As for administrative overhead, we already have a ticketing system in place in most places with plastic cards tied to people's identities (if they choose to). In my city it's only used to charge out-of-towners and tourists.

But sometimes one would like their public transport to go to places and not spend too much time doing it.
In 2012 my city decided to let people keep their 23€ per month (it was already fare-free for pensioners and disabled people, a student's monthly pass was around 9€ IIRC). They made up the difference of about 1/3 from the city budget and said that the taxes of more people moving into the city made up for it. Since then the number of people using cars to get to places has increased. For those people the cost of a monthly pass is not an issue, it's just that public transport has shittier service.

I long for that day when we can have fun internet arguments trying to divide the legacy of the grand duchy and who were the real people in charge five hundred years ago instead of worrying what the insane dictator is going to do next or who he might send the death squads after :(

Having stable countries where people are free increases the stability and prosperity of everyone around

What stuck with me were interviews to LT press by the kurd/persian/african migrants that Batka was trying to send over the border -- they said that they had pretty good jobs and lives in their home countries until they went to a protest once for x/y/z reason and the government made their lives hell, they lost their jobs and they had to escape for a better life. Pretty much the same as all the belarussians that were not long after relocating to Lithuania. All lovely dictatorships just follow the same rulebook to immiserate their people even if for a while it can be disguised during times of economic growth as "wise management led by a strong hand", all that poo poo eventually falls apart into repressions
