These I can do, by going cross-eyed.

I can sort of do magic eyes that way too, but it's really difficult and the image becomes 3d the wrong direction

If you think about and try to become aware of how relaxed your eyes feel when they look at the horizon or wall compared to how they feel when focusing on something close, you can train yourself to relax your eyes to "look through" the image and line them up with each other the proper way. It takes practice to really control it, but the key is to be aware of how it feels, and then you can control it consciously.

I mindlessly practice controlling my focus pretty much every day, I like to line up the edges of objects, or railings on fences, or overlap cars in the distance for fun. It's a weird hobby but I bet I have really powerful ocular muscles as a result.

I stare through the picture, and it goes out of focus. Then I think I notice something in the foreground of my vision and focus on that, and then I find myself with the ordinary 2D image in focus. :shrug:
