new varials is extreeeeemely my poo poo. very clear progression of their sound while retaining enough of what's familiar to keep it tied to previous albums. didn't even realize on first listen that it was a different singer until i read that they parted with the last guy. stoked for a full release or EP with more of this new stuff

The Black Dahlia Murder vocalist Trevor Strnad, and all around loved figure in metal, has died. The band has posted the following statement alongside the 1-800 number for National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. We wish Strnad's friends and family all the best at this time. Words cannot express what he's done for metal over the years, and we will all miss him dearly.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Trevor Scott Strnad. Beloved son, brother, and Shepard of good times, he was loved by all that met him. A walking encyclopedia of all things music. He was a hugger, a writer, and truly one of the world’s greatest entertainers. His lyrics provided the world with stories and spells and horror and whimsy. It was his life to be your show."

Lowkey started looking for the nearest tour date, which is a pretty far drive. Zombie EP is one of my favorite bits of metal

I'd you like converge you will definitely like botch.

As far as bands similar to cult leader: nails, trap them, heirophant(I think I spelled that wrong), Ed Gein are all good ones

Always makes me laugh that the guitarist from a band as heavy as Botch went on to make his name in a band as mellow as Minus the Bear

The guitarist from converge did a side project that was like super chill sort of free form jazz. It's really good actually

If you like Cult Leader, most of the members were in another band called Gaza and their album I Don't Care When I Go When I Die is one of my favourite heavy albums of all time.

Breaking up and reforming as a different band after the singer was accused of sexual assault was absolutely the right thing to do but I find Cult Leader's music just doesn't hit the same as Gaza did unfortunately.

Gaza slaps but cult leader is a better version of them imo. And I didn't know about the sexual assault stuff yikes.

Henchman of Santa

The sexual assault stuff against Jon Parkin got dropped and the break up didn't happen until a couple of years later IIRC. And then at least one of the Cult Leader guys played in Bird Eater with Parkin. So idk if that's 100% the reason for Cult Leader's existence or not, but when they announced their existence the message was "We used to be a band. Now we're a better one." Maybe he got accused again or something else happened internally with them. Hard to recall the exact timeline.

tim lambesis went to jail for several years for hiring a hitman to kill his wife, but found jesus again or something

for what it's worth, he seems to be on legitimately good terms with most of the people he's totally hosed over in his life and his penance seems genuine, and i'd like to think this is one of those times that someone actually changed for the better. justice prevails, etc

it could, of course, all be an act. who knows!

oh, I'm the first one to get Sad About A Girl, but it felt more like a "girl I met at a bar isn't texting me back" than a "she's leaving and she's taking the dog" situation. That said, I do always like seeing a buncha dudes with neck tattoos and sleeveless band tees trying to cheer up a homie.

brought my normie buddy to born of osiris and veil of maya when i was in new york and he was surprised at how well everyone got along. i always forget there's a stigma about people who listen to "devil" music but it couldn't be further from the truth for the metalcore scene where everyone is just a giant pussy who hides it behind breakdowns (myself very much included)

The worst thing I'm worried about at a "devil music" show is getting my teeth accidentally knocked out or maybe a collarbone broken from a stage dive gone wrong. But I've been to more than one Top 40s type concert where I was like, "oh, poo poo, I might be on the verge of having A Violence done to me". Dudes get crazy aggro when they think pussy is on the line.
