If I were in charge, the next Yakuza game you'd play the whole time as one of the people who hand out pocket tissues and that's all you'd do for combat segments. All sorts of move styles and heat moves to handover a thing of tissue. constantly encountering thugs and situations where a little tissue is the answer.

Especially when it comes to 3, where the whole plot is focused on the bonds between men, oaths of brotherhood, and forbidden, unrequited love!

No, wait, there's Dragon Day Care, and the delightful juxtaposition between the world's best dad resolving found-family peacefully and a grown man who throws temper tantrums when his yakuza-mom chews him out. That's the other part of Y3 that matters.

Barker job for Ichi and crew. In addition to being non-lethal like all Yakuza combat, it's super-extra-non-lethal like Snake style. Debuffs like Name Drop (We've got girls! Yes, even her!) and instant KOs like Magic Tissue ('Scuse me! Does this smell like choloroform to you?)

Joon GiHan going first and his ability to just shoot guns makes out leveled substories so funny.

Persimmon sniper, hothead reporters, a dude pissing in the river. The smaller the stakes the more it makes me chuckle.

Edit: I am dreading the surprise party. Like I know that Futaba-san and Mizue-chan can't be the same person. Just can't be.

The faces are the original operator's faces, so you are seeing Hibana and Echo with Yakuza costumes.

When Majima comes out, it will be a full character override for... Echo again.

There's a skin for Leon from Resident Evil 4, it uses Lion's face and the Leon stuff is just a costume.

I just started Yakuza 5, and jesus loving christ... I've seen and laughed at some outrageously violent and hilariously mean-spirited heat moves before, but Essence of Face Dragging might legitimately be the single most brutal thing I've ever seen in a game. It's not even that graphic, but the animation makes me wince every single time.

Weirdly enough the Kiryu one didn't bug me, but Saejima's Essence of Bell Ringing in 4 freaked me out, as did Majima's thing in 0 (which may've been in the other games?), where he leans over a downed enemy and empties an entire teapot full of boiling water on the poor guy's face.

It's really weird how some of them screw with me, and some of them don't- on paper the pliers and box of nails are way worse, but they don't bother me nearly as much.

What he didn't realize is, (4 spoilers) TEPCO secretly gave him rubber electrical units and rubber pavement.

Honestly my biggest laugh-out-loud feel the heat moment in the entire game is probably Saejima's first sequence in 5, where after a whole build up about wanting to avoid violence and be a better person, he dramatically tells a prison yard full of scumbags that he's going to kick their rear end but take care not to kill anyone... and then 5 seconds later this happens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kr5V2lCDF_E&t=230s

Saejima is like a reverse One Piece character who ate a Gum Fruit that turned everything else into rubber instead of him.

"Ah," Ratz had said, at last, "the artiste."
Finally finished Lost Judgment and much like the first game I just couldn't stop taking selfies for some reason! Here's a few of them:

** minor LJ spoilers **

Literally blinked in the very first one :argh:

The main plot is pretty mixed, but I do like all the little hangout moments in the beginning. Even the bumbling principal is a pretty likable guy.

The real problems start when the entire plot starts to focus on these two. You loving suck, Kuwana!

I probably spent an hour on this train platform looking for the last camera. God, I hated this part.

I did like that kidnapping people and dragging them to an old arcade has become a running theme of the series.

We all took a break from getting beat to poo poo to go play the VR game, right? They should have had the random customer service people act unnerved when you approach them covered in blood like this.

Overall I thought the pretty low stakes MRC substories were much better than everything going on in the main plot, even if some of them dragged it out a bit too long.

I did most of the school stories at night though, which makes Yagami come across as a real creep!

This is the worst room in the game.

Kamurocho is pretty sparse in this one, but the DLC adds some pretty good substories. The derelict hotel filled making a return and being filled with perverts was a definite highlight. Also featuring a surprise cameo from 'Voluptuous Woman', the nameless lady from the secret casino who Yagami befriended in the last game.

They created this entire gym to use it twice for two brief cutscenes. It was really begging for a minigame where you challenge students to a game of HORSE or something.

They really overdid it with two Saori dressup sequences, but they let her take selfies this time at least.

Sometimes the random passerbys will pose for selfies too, only this one got stuck doing it backwards so it just makes it look like she was making fun of us?

I like the hermit's whole vibe, but does anyone actually use extracts? I used the ridiculous laser one during the ending for kicks and the beatdown one to clown Amon but that was about it.

My pet theory is that Kashiwagi got the funds for this place by just embezzling everything from the Honest Living Association from Y3. There's a reason that big dumb castle never comes up again :tinfoil:

I took selfies in these two nondescript rooms because these are the only two times in the game where you're in a building fighting guys and it gives you a save point. It's so weird and out of place and I wonder if it was a holdover from YLAD that they just used for the hell of it.

I also snapped this one just because it's another oddity. They sealed off Little Asia in LJ but left it on the map, all so they could use it for an extremely lackluster parkour sequence.

Yagami cheating on multiple women again! I didn't bother with the nurse.

There's a real dearth of disguise opportunities in LJ, so I used the ninja school alley to snap a quick photo of Bramsylvania Yagami. Not sure why the red warning signs appear in selfies though?

You do get the chance to wear a disguise around town late in the game, so I took the opportunity to throw it back to homeless Yagami from the very beginning of the first game. Still has a better fit than regular Yagami imho

Group photo!

The endgame is such a mess I have no idea why Yagami was even wearing a suit when I took this. Was there a courtroom scene I completely glossed over mentally?

Instead of vanishing from the gameworld entirely in the post-game, Kaito and Higashi are just perpetually nodding off at their places of business, which is a nice touch.

And as always, it ends with this guy. Or his brother, or something? I can't keep them straight.

at some point there will be full-blown fatality heat-moves where you rip someone's skull and spine out of their body and in the cutscene after you're the one hunched over looking like you barely made it out alive.

** BONUS KAITO SELFIE ROUNDUP **

I only took a few selfies because frankly, the Kaito Files is extremely short. Had to stop by the three best Yakuza haunts, though.

There is this sequence I enjoyed where you're supposed to be urgently rushing up the stairs to rescue someone from a raging building fire. Not so urgent I couldn't snap some sweet pics first!

You never get the chance to use the camera at this guy's baller countryside home, which is a shame. I took this awkward selfie as a consolation prize after a group of thugs chased me in here and knocked over his table.

Not as much Higashi as I would have liked either tbh!!!

~it's like poetry, it rhymes~

One obligatory superboss fight and that's a wrap on Kaito as well!

Overall I really came around on LJ by the end, but the Kaito Files is a much better, much more distilled experience overall. Here's hoping they go full Y0 dual protagonist for the next one, Even Harder to Find Judgment.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood something here, but performance modes aren't supposed to make the game look better or give you all the rez. They're meant to do the exact opposite and make the game run at a higher frame rate by turning down the resolution and/or graphics settings, which usually means a pretty big drop in visuals on the Series S.

History Comes Inside!

Yeah performance mode across every single console and game is the “I don’t care how lovely it looks just give me all the frames you can” option.

Because more frames is what is generally considered to be better performance.

i've started playing 6, and it's really surprising me. my impression of the game from far away was that it suffered from being the first dragon engine game (and i mean it does, in that it clearly lacks content compared to the monster that is 5) but it actually feels way more polished than what i've seen of kiwami 2 and even 7 does. 7 is janky as gently caress and can look pretty weird in a lot of the cheaper made side activities and i took that as just a fact of the dragon engine but i guess it really isn't when they completely nailed their first attempt. also helping of course is how the game is actually fully voiced instead of only halfway there and completely lacks the classic text box conversations. i'm impressed!

i don't even mind the smaller variety of heat actions because i never managed to use most of them in actual combat anyway lol

Last Celebration
Mar 30, 2010
Tbh the main thing that sticks out for 6 is that Kiryu just kinda felt impotent in his combos, combined with the EXP system feeling badly implemented compared to K2. And probably the worst substory implementation in a post-remaster Yakuza world.

It’s a game I largely was not feeling but I’m glad you’re enjoying it!
