Schwarzwald posted:Is this a serious inquiry? We had a couple for when the power went out instead of just candles when I was a kid. I'll explain then. Lantern oil isn't pure(and probably was even less pure a century and change ago) and the detritus would sink to the bottom. If the oil all burned up, that left over trash would burn making nasty smoke and ash. So if you didn't clean them when you refill and let them burn out, it was pretty gross. .

And is Jared supposed to be ugly? He doesn't look significantly different than anyone else in this strip. Wait, was Jared supposed to be a burn victim or am I thinking of another guy? Breaking Cat News Phoebe and Her Unicorn Wallace the Brave Heart of the City Curtis, you only get one strip because holy hell Comics Kingdom won't give you YESTERDAY'S strip for free.

Burn victim is another guy. Jared's traits are that he is a schlub who can't stop saying "Gosh, I'm so boring and forgettable. You'd be better off without me." and then getting upset when someone looks away from him.

It's "Out Our Way" not "And He Did". Every one of the characters in that strip lived long lives and died in bed of old age surrounded by their loving families and a dorg. Also, when Williams does a sad strip he always does a little poem to drive it home.
