Also Bo Burnham released an outtakes / behind the scenes version of Inside last night. It's a fully edited comedy special with plenty of new material that wasn't in the release last year, but it still has a lot of the raw footage and some genuine outtakes where he's dropping stuff or forgetting he's recording and stuff like that. There's one real good part where he lines up many different takes when he was recording the video for "Welcome to the Internet" and it shows how much effort goes into 30 seconds of footage.

It's free on Youtube.

JD Vance is some sort of weird test of the failure of what we view as society as far as I can tell.

He's just a good old boy who went to Yale telling everyone how you're doing all the harm and it's all your fault. And he somehow got super famous for writing...well that. And he isn't a good old boy either. It'd be fascinating if it wasn't so depressing.

The confusion on that point seems understandable; she apparently shut the door but the door was still unlocked and it's still the door where the gunman came in. It's good that the teacher is somewhat vindicated, though.

They flat out lied to the press trying to make it seem like it was the teachers fault 19 kids died, not their own fault for just standing around with their dicks in their hands for an hour while children frantically called 911 begging for help.

It's bad that an individual teacher was thrown under the bus and good that she gets some level of vidication, but propped open or not, somehow a door that was supposed to be locked ended up unlocked and that's where the shooter came in. That's a relevant detail in all of this, and it's not a fabrication.

In a strategic rather than tactical sense do you think locked doors were any part of the problem here?

Or are you of the school of thought that if we just lock more doors everything will work out (and not turn into a fire hazard)?

Plus, he'd left the gate open and there was evil everywhere.

Here is a better question. Why do we need to lock all the doors in a school to stop people coming in and killing children to begin with?

Skwirl posted:

This is the lawyer's statement:

quote:

“She saw the wreck,” Flanary said. “She ran back inside to get her phone to report the accident. She came back out while on the phone with 911. The men at the funeral home yelled, ‘He has a gun!’ She saw him jump the fence, and he had a gun so she ran back inside.

“She kicked the rock away when she went back in. She remembers pulling the door closed while telling 911 that he was shooting. She thought the door would lock because that door is always supposed to be locked.”

And elsewhere in the article:

quote:

The source said investigators are trying to determine if the door was unlocked earlier or if its lock was not working because the gunman used the same door to get into the school, go down the hallways and into adjacent rooms 111 and 112. The rooms were full of fourth-graders, where he took advantage of a delayed police response and shot and killed his victims.

The source said at least one other school employee has reported to federal agents and DPS that at least one other door in the building did not lock, so investigators are looking into that report. Investigators also have received reports that another entry/exit door into the building was open during school hours, the source said.

So it may well be that the whatever system controls the doors locking is to blame (for the door being unlocked, that is), but when the sequence of events is "came outside and propped open the door-went back inside-gunman came in the same door", I certainly can see how the narrative could arrive where it did without a lot of willful obfuscation.

Now, should the question of how the gunman got inside be the lead story here? Of course not.

Leperflesh
May 17, 2007

Typically fire doors on buildings like that are locked from outside entry but can be opened from inside without a key, optionally setting off an alarm. Ideally, they can also be unlocked from outside by firefighters.

And also yeah a door not being locked properly would be just one relatively minor failure in a long list of abject failures, with failure of our society to keep people like that away from guns as #1 and failure of the cops to do jack poo poo for an hour + being #2. The door is like #17.
