That house is not nearly interesting enough on the inside to warrant a roof like that.

Hey that’s my hometown! The roofing is coiled to heat it and melt the snow away. That’s like 8 months of winter where the house is. Doesn’t excuse how terrible of a roof it is otherwise, but that’s why you see coils just.. everywhere.

It's a dugout, though normally those are basically a buried log cabin and should have a turf roof, the flat top kind of ruins it.

Folks say in the replies that in that part of the country it was once if not common then not uncommon for a family to have a foundation built, finish it as living space, and live in it while they build funds back up to finish the rest of the house. If something happens and they're never able to finish it--say because the bread winner goes to prison for triple homicide and tax evasion--you end up with a basement house.

ultrafilter posted:I had a brain fart and read "LA" as "Los Angeles" but maybe this still interesting anyway. this town is southeast of new orleans where basically the land is just a bare ditch between the river and the sea. thats a pretty extreme low-cost example but in flood country most new build houses will be lifted off the ground a story or more. if you've got the money to conceal it well then it can be hard to tell that the bottom floor is basically just an above-ground basement where you put things that you don't care get ruined by water in a storm. if you don't have the money then you just get a singlewide on reinforced pilings. either way, the house is effectively flood-proof which is the real property ruiner when a hurricane comes here's a less extreme example of the same idea from florida, this house would survive anything short of a direct hit from a bad hurricane https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/8105-W-Highway-98-Port-Saint-Joe-FL-32456/103304811_zpid/ here's another example where the same idea is concealed as a more typical house. the tell is that the bottom most floor is nothing but a garage, storage, and a bathroom maybe, where inside the front door there are stairs that immediately go to the second level. most likely the supports are heavily reinforced and the walls designed to break away with sufficient force, to let water pass beneath without pulling the house down https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/4844-Ocean-Blvd-Destin-FL-32541/45966095_zpid/ Mr. Fall Down Terror has a new favorite as of 02:35 on May 19, 2022 |

what the gently caress is up with this combined foyer/living room situation. this house has the DIY feel of a self-designed smaller house but with all the rich people amenities like giant rooms and commercial grade cooking gear in a wet bar or some poo poo. a wood fired oven and some kind of carpeted exercise spa https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/2397-Route-381-Ln-Rector-PA-15677/2063321925_zpid/ "custom Frank Lloyd Wright designed estate" *looks like a tchotchkie shop from 1996* https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/4402-W-Deermeadow-Dr-Peoria-IL-61615/5114254_zpid/ most of this house is just mildly bad in a boring way (except for the elephant collection) but hands down the worst "impressive library" room i've ever seen https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/870-Stone-Coal-Rd-Pikeville-KY-41501/2127190338_zpid/

It was an old truck garage so it had some rooms around the sides where offices and bathrooms and stuff had been, and then everything else was ripped out and there had been a huge empty space in the middle where the truck-serve area had been. Tall too, probably 30ft to the ceiling. So, rather than building the huge space into rooms again, instead the architecht designed a kind of secondary house-y structure in the middle with all sorts of little nooks and staircases, catwalks that connected stuff, and the coolest thing was a room that had really soft rope for a floor, like a hammock floor. I'm really not doing it justice, it was so, so cool. Such a great way to use that space... I gotta find pictures of it somehow.
