I appreciate the sympathies and may need them after I expire from the sheer terribleness of it all. The day starts with an 05:15 departure from YDF on a Rouge 319 and connects to the stankass CR2 for YYZ-MKE. Getting home early is nice, but holy poo poo I am not looking forward to any of that.

Well, unless you can take a real plane to Chicago and drive? (I’m assuming that train only runs once a day or whatever that stupid COVID schedule is)

I've got bad news re: the flight from Deer Lake. A rouge 319 is a slight improvement on a CRJ-200 but... not by much.

(I’m assuming that train only runs once a day or whatever that stupid COVID schedule is) We use ORD somewhat frequently since it's only about an hour away as you noted. In this case, these are award tickets because Air Canada wants haha go gently caress yourself money for tickets to or from YDF whereas saver awards were available to MKE and not to ORD, so it is what it is. Amtrak actually runs several times per day between Chicago and Milwaukee but the issue is that you have to get from ORD to Union Station in downtown Chicago which is a 45 minute ride on the Blue line plus a two block walk over to Union Station, then the 90 minute ride up to MKE. By the time all that poo poo happens, it's much more cost effective to rent a car one way and drive it.

When you people studied for your PPL, did you actually benefit from books? I'm following a remote learning course but it's basically just slide presentations and quizzes. I have no idea to gauge how thorough it is (although the volume of information seems to be in the right order).

The information tested in the written is largely useless- for your oral exam, do some ground with your instructor! Or join the discord server and have us teach you everything

Patagonian Cavy is dead on about using Sheppard (or something similar) for the written, but as far as actual information, the FAA's Airplane Flying Handbook and Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge are great resources, and are free to boot.

I could not help but see the scene where Cruise and Teller are in the snowy woods as a conversation between two writers in the wrtiers' room, which made it a very good/funny scene. Cruise: It makes zero sense for you to be here in this scene and location! Teller We foreshadowed this! With dialogue! Cruise: But that was just some poo poo I said, as a dumb trope! Why did you take that seriously?! Teller: We are all dumb tropes, dude! It's what we do! *shrugs*

The plot is thinly veiled 80’s action schlock to get to the plane porn, which is good.

The boat (not the ships) and the helicopter were secret stars of the show over the planes.

If that movie didn't do it for you, you did not go there to see a Top Gun sequel. Edit: I'm told the Hawkeye crew are legit, which I suspected.

It wasn’t until the we hate movies episode on the original top gun that I caught that in the end of the prologue: quote:Don't screw around with me Maverick. You're a hell of an instinctive pilot. Maybe too good. I'd like to bust your butt but I can't. I got another problem here. I gotta send somebody from this squadron to Miramar. I gotta do something here, I still can't believe it. I gotta give you your dream shot! I'm gonna send you up against the best. You two characters are going to Top Gun. They literally say the characters in this movie are going to the movie!

How does the angle of observation factor into the visible color? E - Wait, does the setup only show the “not going to die” color if you’re viewing it from the optimal position/orientation in relation to the lights/runway? If so that’s a pretty slick way of handling that completely passively.

That police confrontation kind of reminds me of when I did some time building in Southern Utah a while back. I didn't know what Colorado City, AZ was (Mormon Fundamentalist polygamist sect settlement). I went there now and then for touch and goes since there was never any traffic and started to notice trucks with a bunch of guys in the back showing up near the runway. I thought they were there to plane watch and judge my landings, but later learned they were likely town authorities ready to confront me if I actually landed. I stopped going there after learning about it all, it was before the Warren Jeffs stuff came about. There weren't ever any NOTAMs about it not being usable.
