The major driving force behind the American public library was Andrew Carnegie, a steel baron, proponent of laissez-faire economics, and dude who let Henry Clay Frick go ham on the Homestead strikers. Carnegie funded free libraries out of a kind of noblesse oblige, not out of any belief in socialism. My library has two Nintendo Switch systems. Sure those you can check out for in library use and not take home, but they also have Switch games. I got a Cricut Easy Press for my partner a few weeks ago. Just this $100+ tool and they handed to me for no money or form of payment needing to be on record. They also keep a running total of how much you've save in the last year/lifetime and in the two years I've had a card I'm at like $3000 saved

They also have museum passes, wifi hotspots with unlimited data, some even have loving cookware and appliances you can borrow. My only complaint about my library is that it closes too early because we don't fund it enough.

My library is rad and among its services offers a Maker's Space with about any equipment you could need. Some computers capable of video editing, laser cutter, 3d printers, sewing machines, etc. I don't trust a motherfucker that dislikes a library.

Not only did they buy 2 and 3 after I requested them they also put them on hold so I got the books first. I really need to become a friend of the library because I want to give them money for the service they provide

One thing I don't think gets emphasized enough about libraries is how they can function as community centers or meeting places. Not to get pretentious about it, but I think if you're just thinking of a library as a places that stores information that you go to borrow you're only seeing a very small part of the role it can and should play in a healthy community.

Americans are so weirdly against having any sort of public or semipublic hangout space that isn't just a straight up restaurant.

The town I grew up in had a bunch of small libraries all over the place, mostly in strip malls, that worked that way. There were meeting rooms that Cub Scouts did stuff in, after-school programs, adult literacy classes, etc. Then they got some grant money and built one huge library in the old industrial part of downtown, nowhere near any residential areas or bus stops or restaurants or consumer-facing businesses of any type. All of the small libraries closed one by one. Within two years it was this: McCracAttack posted:"Oh you mean all those homeless people laying about in there likely doing drugs?"

Here is an Amazon review of the Animal Crossing manga:quote:This is NOT appropriate for kids. I was looking for a sweet manga for my 8 year old niece, who loves Animal Crossing, and this came up when I searched for “manga for kids”. Luckily I knew that with manga you just never know what they mean by “for kids”, so I read it before giving it as a gift. Good thing I did! There’s a picture of a statue that imitates”The Birth of Venus”, but using one of the characters, mostly naked except for a sheet. Another character runs around completely naked with only a tiny fig leaf covering his privates. There are statues of used swim clothes, dirty and buzzing with flies. The rest of the manga is full of gags and slapstick humor, somewhat structured around a group of friends arriving at the deserted island at the start of Animal Crossing. I should also note that 3/4 of the book is about this loose story, and the rest is a list of characters and one page gags. If that’s your thing, fine. But as an adult I didn’t find it interesting or even humorous, and I certainly won’t be giving this to a child. (If you want a cute manga for kids, try Chi’s Sweet Home.)
