A moment later the driver of Car 1 feels a bump as Car 2 hits the back of Car 1, followed by another as the Porsche hits Car 2. At some point in there, although we don't know when, Car 4 hits the Porsche. In a three-car scenario it seems most likely that the Porsche was going too fast and the driver had just slammed on the brakes when it hit the stationary Car 2, knocking it into Car 1 before rolling into Car 2. Car 4 couldn't quite brake in time and only tapped the back of the Porsche, which is why the front two drivers felt two impacts instead of three. However, the involvement of Car 4 raises a different possibility: that the Porsche was in the process of braking correctly when it was hit by Car 4, who braked too late. The Porsche was thus going faster than the driver intended when it hit Car 2, because it was suddenly accelerated by the impact from behind, while Car 4 is slowed enough to stop without fully joining the pile-up. It's possible for this to happen without the Porsche being damaged from behind because force of impact is determined by relative speed between the two objects, not absolute speed of the striking object. If the Porsche was doing 30mph and Car 4 hits it while doing 40mph, it's as if the stationary Porsche had been hit by a car going only 10mph. This is why the last car in a serial collision is deemed at fault unless there's evidence to the contrary (e.g. Driver 2 was driving correctly when Driver 1 suddenly slammed on the brakes). The last driver had the most time to brake and the most opportunities to make things worse. (As for the Porsche driver letting Car 4 go because "he's a mensch" and knew the other driver wasn't at fault - when have you ever seen an idiot in a road dildo take responsibility for his own bad driving?)

Aside from the story you just told us? And thank you for explaining. It makes way more sense to me now and does sound like they were potentially at fault. For a bit there I thought the lead car was being held responsible and I was super confused.
