Danny Devito is way more intense than King Caesar. Danny Devito as King Caesar, except they don't use costumes, perspective, CG, or green screen to make him look larger - he just attacks their toes and they go flying hundreds of feet

It really stunk because they made this big deal about how practical effects and suit work was dated and stupid because CG is the hot new thing, but the best shots of the dumb movie WERE practical

I don't recall them ever saying that, it'd be going back on how they made ID4 (where anything that blew up real good was a model, because CG explosions weren't quite there yet.) And the various making-of material (at least the stuff that was released after the film came out and G's appearance was revealed) shows a lot of the practical and miniature work they did.

What people don’t really realize is that “digital backlot” wasn’t a thing until the mid-to-late 2000s. If you saw anything spectacular or fantastical in a film before then, it was - more likely than not - a miniature or other practical effect. The unreality is due to those effects actually getting far better (and used more extensively) than they ever were in the 80s or whatever.

Yeah I mean the only 2 honestly impressive CGI effects from the 80s I can think of off the top of my head were the stained glass knight in Young Sherlock and Jupiter in 2010 (which was rendered by a Cray) edit: in 1985 this was incredibly impressive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKb61j8P4fU GATOS Y VATOS fucked around with this message at 14:50 on May 25, 2022 |

Corridor Crew did a video on that knight. I didn’t like their recreation much, but it was more about explaining the process. The video gives a lot of insight into how that effect was pulled off back in the day. https://youtu.be/mnhS36GdM9s

Also, a lot of my industry friends who are working on things like the new Mission Impossible say that CC basically don't know what they are talking about in there "Reacts" series.

Eh, you’re being a bit hard on them. They spend a small amount of time on the recreations and the intent isn’t to be perfect or even good. It’s more to show the process involved and how the workflow has changed in 30 years. The Jurassic Park thing was shot using toys and some stock T-Rex model they bought (and yes it looked abysmal). I can’t imagine spending more time on that stuff would pay off for some YouTube videos.

As long as we're on an FX/CG tangent, the dinos in the new Prehistoric Planet show on Apple+ might be a new high water mark for CG work. Holy poo poo. The quality of the closeups on the animals is astonishing.

The alien snail that I don't think has ever shown up again! I am unspeakably excited, I need an American release, I must see this movie. edit, OK, after watching the whole thing which is only a minute long and just setup, no plot or anything, holy poo poo. Ultra q is canon! Shin Ultraman isn't just a remake of Ultraman, it's a direct sequel to Ultra Q!!! Amazing. Gripweed fucked around with this message at 17:19 on May 27, 2022 |

I just finished watching Shin Ultraman and my opinion is its kind of poo poo, but the opening montage is funny at least and theres some decent humor throughout. The best Kaiju action is in the first 30 minutes and after that it just spins going nowhere with mediocre beam struggles.Very nice visuals on the final kill. That said, if you've ever wanted to give Ultraman an appreciative buttslap your film has arrived
