Russia has dispatched attack helicopters and fighter jets to its base in Syria’s northeastern province of Hasakah upon a request from the Damascus government.

The decision comes only days after Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reaffirmed Moscow’s determination to support Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Lebanon’s Arabic-language al-Mayadeen television news network, citing informed sources, reported that Russia sent the reinforcement to its airbase near the Kurdish-majority city of Qamishli as part of an ongoing military buildup.

Ethiopia unrest: Sudden arrest of 4,000 spells fear in Amhara

These new measures by Ethiopia's prime minister are designed to clip the wings of an increasingly strident nationalist movement in Amhara, and come months after a humanitarian ceasefire was declared in the war-torn Tigray region next door.

The hugely destructive Tigray conflict has shaken up a complex patchwork of internal and external political alliances - including Ethiopia's recent rapprochement with neighbouring Eritrea, whose forces intervened aggressively in Tigray and may yet seek to do so again.

Local Amhara soldiers and youth militias - known as Fano - played a crucial role in supporting Ethiopia's federal army in its 18-month conflict with the neighbouring region of Tigray, and some now fear they're being sidelined, or even betrayed, by the central government.

I wonder if Abiy cracking down on FANO is an attempt preempt any backlash to a peace deal with the TPLF

the dumbest outcome to this war will be if Abiy supports the TPLF against Eritrea

doubtful that Abiy would try to seek a peace deal with TPLF, why would they? I think we're just looking at what happens, when an imperial state lets its vassals gather too much military power to be cowed by threats. FANO iirc made some rather big demands for territory transfers to the Amhara from Tigray and even other states still loyal to Abiy?

this is even dumber because the Ethiopian army is basically gone, he’s reliant on various ethnic militias and regional paramilitaries who he is alienating. The only reason he’s sitting in Arat Kilo and not strung up or in exile is because of the afar and Amhara volunteers.

they already do, hamas just revealed that during the last conflict they had a 24/7 military operations coordination office with hezbollah and Iran to coordinate.

it’s pretty clear that the Arab Sunni dictators are planning to become 100% Israeli dogs while Iran and the Shiites in general will become the undisputed Islamic leadership position by fighting against them and Israel. the sunni Arab dictators have given Iran a magnificent historical and propaganda victory.

300 dead seems like an exaggeration

NAIROBI, May 31 (Reuters) - Eritrean forces shelled a town in north Ethiopia over the weekend, according to internal U.N. documents and regional forces, in a rare bombardment after two months of relative peace in the Tigray conflict.

Bulletins from the United Nations seen by Reuters cited information from humanitarian organizations in Shiraro saying at least 23 rounds were fired, some hitting a school housing displaced families.

A 14-year-old girl was killed, at least 18 people were injured and 12 houses were damaged, one of the documents said.

Late on Monday, the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), the party that controls most of Tigray region, accused Eritrean forces of attacking its troops on Saturday and Sunday in Shiraro, about seven miles from the Eritrea-Ethiopia border.

Eritrea has supported Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's federal forces in its war since late 2020 with the TPLF.

The TPLF said its forces had killed four Eritrean commanders and more than 300 Eritrean soldiers in the weekend flare-up.

Eritrean Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and Reuters was unable to independently verify those numbers or the attack.

Tigray's communication network has been down for a year.

"As part of their desperate attempt to escalate the tension and drag us into more action, they shelled Sheraro in the 28th and 29th of May," TPLF spokesperson Getachew Reda tweeted.

Ethiopia's military spokesman Colonel Getnet Adane and government spokesman Legesse Tulu did not return messages seeking comment.

Eritrean and Ethiopian troops withdrew from most of Tigray in mid-2021 and the government declared a unilateral ceasefire in March. That allowed aid to enter famine-struck Tigray and brought a lull in fighting in a conflict that has killed thousands of civilians and uprooted millions.

However, earlier this year, Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki told state media his troops would intervene again should Tigrayan forces attack his country or threaten Ethiopia's stability.

Erdogan has been talking about this openly for weeks now and everyone knows that long term the Turks were opposed to the PYD governing territory anywhere. The Turkish operation into Northern Iraq has been going for over a month, and they've shelled Kurdish areas of Syria during it too.

The US is mad, but they are dumb if they really didn't see this coming.

idk how things are now but these pop off every few years when different subsidies are rolled back, gas stations on fire, attacked govt buildings. i imagine inflation is hitting iran hard now and wheat insecurity is driving prices high compounded by rolling back bread subsidies (5/10): https://www.ft.com/content/15c77929-395a-4f28-a09e-c74c7c46a2ab

The US is not mad, making Turkey a genocidal fascist state has always been it's more or less explicit policy. They're just expected to wring their hands about it a little bit for appearances.
