I had lunch with Larry Wall at a conference a few years back, and the cult of personality surrounding him was intensely weird to see up close. The guy has groupies, an entourage, even. There was a whole Larry Wall Machine that traveled around him. If it's that bad around him, I can only imagine how difficult it is to stay engaged with reality at Jobs/Gates/Zuckerberg/Musk/Bezos levels.

I have never seen a programming language crash into complete and utter irrelevance as swiftly as Perl. It really is quite amazing, especially considering its role in the early days of the web. Imagine throwing away that sort of first mover advantage.

nobody writes applications with it and no one is writing lots of new perl code. It rapidly went the way of cobol.

I bailed instantly as it was clear this was an impossibly stupid team and last I checked they had a story at the top of their backlog for three years just to migrate to git. Nothing had been improved

i feel like perl had more time in the limelight than ruby, right? I feel like perl had a pretty normal rise/fall in popularity but ruby burst onto the scene and then faded away almost as quickly
