CLAM DOWN posted:This is the best Star Trek since DS9. Change my mind. You're not wrong, and it's not because nuTrek for the most part is a low bar to clear either. I was waiting for a lower stakes, casual, more character driven episode with a proper A and B plot and it didn't disappoint. Love seeing the crew just do things on their off time like in the old Trek. What's the purpose of the green tunic on Pike/Kirk in TOS, is it just an alternative to the usual command gold? It is weird but I didn't watch the season 3 premiere of The Orville. Since SNW isn't garbage I don't need it, I guess? Maybe when SNW ends this season I will catch up, but for right now my itch is being scratched, compared to Discovery that wasn't scratching anything (except me scratching my eyes out)

My man was about to get some lotus root pilaf but he let it get cold. Life (in space) is hard. (Lotus root is my one of my favorite vegetables and if you've never had it run down to your local Chinese market and try it out. It cooks like potato slices.)

Maybe my favorite episode of the show. It's funny that Orville is the substantial and deep show now and Trek is the popcorn entertainment. Enjoying both but in different ways. Charity Porno posted:TOS is a giant pile of trash with a few gems shining through the heap Not really, I don't think. It only falls apart in the third season. Most of the first and second seasons are pretty good, with the rest being ok. Season 1, the only episode I consider actively bad is The Alternative Factor, where on the other hand, it gives us The Naked Time, The City on the Edge of Forever, , The Devil in the Dark,, Space Seed, A Taste of Armageddon, Balance of Terror and Errand of Mercy. Season 2, the only episodes I think are actively bad are Catspaw and The Omega Glory, but you get Amok Time, The Trouble with Tribbles, Journey to Babel, A Private Little War, and A Piece of the Action.

I enjoyed that a hell of a lot, and I think it might be my favourite so far. I love downtime episodes, and the fact that we’ve already gotten to know these characters so well that it felt earned only at ep 5 is great. You know what I want? A season non-finale. Just like TOS when any old episode capped out the season. Make episode 9 the big drama story, and have 10 be the Enterprise holiday party or whatever.

(edit or if it's an actual holiday party, get Joe Dante involved and make it Gremlins in space. You can see why a soul-sharing ritual could be utterly shattering to a relationship. Big stakes! The act 2 twist! Actually this was quite interesting Vulcan characterization. Clearly Spock and T'Pring are sensitive to micro-expressions and vocal tics and assume that everyone else is as sensitive as they are, and therefore they are worried that these will give them away. It's nice to see that Vulcans do actually have personality, they're just alien, so it's not apparent to a human who isn't familiar with Vulcans. For a minute there I thought Lt. Devner was a CGI de-aged Aaron Paul, turns out it was just a completely different person who sorta looks like him with a slightly less weird shaped head. Also at the end are we supposed to think Chapel has a thing for Ortega?

No, Spock. She was touched by his defending of her honor with the Vulcan criminal, as well as the kind way he thanked her for her help. I must be hallucinating, that was the 5th good episode in a row. It was fun, looked good and it had multiple plots that made sense (in the context of Star Trek at least) Why is this show so competent compared to disco + picard? did they finally learn their lesson?

I think it really is just because episodic Trek works better. I remember almost all of the Short Treks despite most of them being pretty forgettable. Couldn’t hardly tell you anything from Discovery past season 1 or Picard.

Does anyone know if the SNW bridge is the same one as the Disco S2 version? I feel like it’s a slight redesign, but I can’t pinpoint why.

They’ve kept bits like the helm and captain’s chair, but everything else seems to have been tightened up. There’s no exterior corridor wrapping around the bridge now, and it’s much more nicely lit.

They love to shoot these sets in widescreen on anamorphic lenses and it's not hard to see why. Looks as good as any 70s moviefilm. In fact the lenses call attention to themselves on occasions like this one, where the director is just screaming "See! It looks just like a movie!"

This was fun as hell. The whole La'an/Una subplot felt like it came from Lower Decks, which is really all I wanted from this show to begin with. Bonus points for showing a Bolian without dramatically altering the 90s makeup. Probably one of the better shore leave episodes in the franchise, not that there's a huge amount of them.

I like that trope in basically anything that does it. The Magicians and The Good Place have two of my favourite bodyswaps. That kind of ep is just good for actors to get to try and show off and also highlight the mannerisms and character/acting choices of characters you might not have noticed or thought consciously of before. They both did great, Spock's voice was softened in a way that I could hear T'pring speaking through him especially when in the big alien meeting when talking about wishing to be home more.
