He reiterated that the 2nd amendment isn't absolute, just like none of the rest of our rights are, and quoted a Scalia ruling saying so. I assume he made more proposals but he's such a bad public speaker I couldn't watch the rest. Man you are cranky today. None of the proposed changes you listed would stop shootings. As long as the humans can legally buy guns then whoops more shootings. The Uvalde shooter was 18 so if the age limit was 21 it would have been tougher to get guns but he either still would have gotten guns now or he would just do a shooting in three years. It would be better than nothing, I suppose. You are acting like a dumb lib though lol

Dem strategy in recent years has been to run solely on impressive rhetoric and maybe, if we're lucky, sneak some actual policy through. Someone like Biden can say that he wants these things done but it's on him and the rest of the party to act. If they can't use their vast political power to enact popular policy, then they either need to willingly cede power to someone who can get it done or they will have that power taken from them by someone who may or may not care. E: or you acknowledge that the system is fundamentally broken, but doing so would be to question their own legitimacy as the people who watched it break, if not actively worked to break it. I want a toilet made out of solid gold, and I can make all the speeches I want about how awesome it would be if I had one, but I ain't getting my toilet until I put in the work to buy or smelt(?) one myself. Biden is introducing a bunch of milquetoast stuff because he knows the right and Manchin (but I repeat myself) will shut it down and refuse to consider any form of gun control whatsoever and then they can fundraise and campaign off of how the right is refusing to even consider common sense reform and it will change zero minds

Ornery and Hornery posted:Man you are cranky today. The goal isn't to propose legislation that would literally stop all shootings, because that requires taking all the guns and that's very obviously not going to happen. It's to do anything to cut back on the shootings. And the assault weapon ban would have prevented him from buying AR-15s, and the age limit would have prevented that shooting entirely. "It would be better than nothing" is the bar, because "nothing" is the status quo from which we have to drag the country, kicking and screaming. Let's get "better than nothing" done and then if that was actually possible, we can take the next step. All-or-nothing never works in politics, you just guarantee nothing. There's this idea that if someone is the enemy, what's important is the anger, not what they say or do, so nitpicking about what they said or did just means you're not being sufficiently ideologically pure and that might erode our righteous anger or some poo poo. I reject that. I think there's more than enough factual things to be angry about, if that's the goal, that we don't need to use misleading quote snippets to add fuel to the fire. If adding context to a stupid twitter quote that completely misrepresents what someone actually said makes me a dumb lib, than so be it.

This issue is definitely not a binary. Every additional hurdle to access the deadliest weapons will save lives. The idea that the 18 year old shooter absolutely would have committed the same crime 4 years later or if he had to use illegal markets to get the guns isn't supported by data. You are never going to "stop shootings", but you can do a hell of a lot to make them far far less frequent. But to Kalli's point, it does feel silly offering modest changes when even the most milquetoast regulations won't get through congress.

Preventing suicide is all about preventing access to easy means of suicide. The British Coal Gas study being the most well known example of that research. If people have to clear additional hurdles, it's harder to make an impulsive decision simply because additional time and planning is required. With that time and planning often comes a reduction in rash behavior. Now we don't have great data on the science of mass shootings because we generally avoid researching shootings in general for political reasons. That said, I have never seen anything confirming your opinion that mass shooters are on aggregate going to commit these violent murders regardless of barriers or institutional structures, outside of preventing them from ever touching a gun under any circumstance.

A giant piece of poo poo from an old job complained about being behind someone paying with EBT because it is a pain in the rear end system that takes forever to process at the checkout, but was even more upset at the idea of making it easier (e.g., a debit card instead of the archaic system of small checks that need individually endorsed).

Quoting people out of context is as old as the hills, but the twitter culture is amping it way way up. It's gotta be incredibly challenging to write any speech in such a way that it can't have a clip cut out that appears to say something bad. Biden is a terrible communicator, so it's especially bad. All that said, I do think the "responsible gun owners" part actually does appeal to the sort of blue-dog democrats that vote for guys like Manchin instead of a republican. I think that speech was mostly for Joe Manchin, who is going to be one of the most important deciding factors of whether actual gun control laws get passed this year.
