The Champ shares several moves with the Ironclad - Shockwave, Inflame, Twin Strike, Metallicise - and his Belt is an Ironclad class relic.

The Silent uses poison and daggers; Reptomancer doesn't use poison because enemies don't, but she's dressed as a venomous snake and she has an endless supply of daggers that look like Silent daggers. She also has the same olive skin as the Silent.

Bronze Automaton shares fewer similarities with the Defect, but they both have Hyperbeam, it's explicit that the Defect is a broken combat automaton and they do have enough likenesses of design to draw a line between them. And while Time Eater has even fewer similarities to the Watcher - just the purple robe - it straight up says that it knew the Watcher before the Spire.

The Watcher also has a “forced turn end” subtheme, with Meditate and Conclude.

Good point, that had momentarily escaped my mind. Although the most relevant card is the one you didn't list - Vault. It lets you end your turn in order to take an extra turn, because it's a

I'm starting to see similarities between watcher and time eater in terms of opposites: TE ends your turn, Watcher can take an extra turn; TE regenerates if it gets to a certain hp, watcher judges an enemy dead if it gets to a certain hp, etc.

And by "etc," I mean "that's all I've though of so far."

It also means “hollow of the mill” (that’s the village the whisky is from translates as) and I’m sure I’ve seen “hollow” as a monster before.

Lagavulin is a hermit crab. It is named after the whisky, but nobody knows why.

A hermit crab with a giant... ocarina?.... for a shell... named after a spirit named after a hollow...

Time slug gets angrier the more cards you play, getting angry lets the watcher play more cards

ImpAtom
May 24, 2007

The Time Eater is the Slay the Spire player: Large, easily angered, gets annoyed when the enemy seems unfair, loves to screw up enemy attack plans.
The Watcher is the Twitch watcher, switching from calm to angry in a heartbeat, frequently thinks of themselves as god, and loves to predict what is going to happen next.

It also looks like the building too. In other words... The Lagavulin in Slay looks quite a bit like the actual Lagavulin building.

Not that that gives us any more rationale as to the naming.

I picked this up from the latest Switch sale, after hearing so much good stuff about it. I’ve managed to complete a run each with the Ironclad and the Silent but I just can’t make it with the Defect and am looking for help. I am not sure what I am doing wrong but it feels like every run I either have too much def and not enough damage or the reverse. I’ve tried looking up some builds to use but they haven’t really been of any use.

my intro Defect advice:

--in general, don't take cards just because you can

--until you know why you'd want one, avoid taking Attacks that don't Channel orbs

--cards that let you draw additional cards pair well with one or more Turbo cards

--remove the Strikes (and once you are comfortable, the Defends) from your deck every time you can, even ahead of buying new things from the shop (unless you really need a specific one)

--your first upgrade should probably be Dualcast

Inexplicable Humblebrag
Sep 20, 2003

first upgrade should be zap, imo. i used to be a die-hard dualcast upgrader until i tried out the zap approach

e: although to be honest i've played downfall for so long that i've largely forgotten why. i think it's less bursty? you can sometimes draw a dualcast when you've nothing to evoke, but you will almost always want to get a leccy orb down on the field

Yestermoment
Jul 27, 2007

Also, as awesome as Echoform can be, it can be a trap if you don't have the right setup (ability to play something else a turn, the defense to recuperate/damage to obliterate quickly, etc).

It's easy to just suck up cards every chance you have, but like with the others, you want to try and have a deck that is 1. Lean (<25) and 2. Relatively consistent in strategy. (If you're going for an orb/invoke strategy, don't take All For One just because it's the only card that is decent)

It's more that Dualcast is generally worth paying 1 energy for and Zap usually isn't.

I got this title for the dumbest fucking possible take on sea shanties. Specifically, I derailed the meme thread because sailors in the 18th century weren't woke enough for me, and you shouldn't sing sea shanties. In fact, don't have any fun ever.
upgrade dualcast, remove zap

Also, re: beginner Defect advice: make sure you can generate some frost orbs, and get as much +focus and +orb slots as you can. Biased Cognition is really really good, Defragment is very good, Consume is pretty good and becomes very good if you have a Capacitor or two. This isn't the only way to win as Defect but it's the most commonly successful one.

Whenever I get the chance, I like to do the opposite and just go ratshit with card draw and 0-cost cards, especially the one that raises its damage every time it's used (Scratch?). As long as you don't neglect the defensive side of things, it works pretty great.

Seems to pair unusually well with Echo Form and Hologram too, because both let you furiously spam your 0-cost bullshit even more egregiously with very little downside.

Reinforced Body can be a pretty good card to scoop up if you have trouble balancing attack and defence - it's a reasonably solid block with some situational flexibility due to its X cost. And if you have Chemical X it's an absolute no-brainer; poo poo can just about make you invincible

Mayhem.

Also to the new player, if it's not obvious you'll unlock new cards and relics as you play classes. The progression is shown on the class selection screen. Don't worry about getting specific cards mentioned in the advice here right away, some stuff may not be available until you get it unlocked.

Thanks for the help. Although I still haven’t won a run it feels like it’s going better. I think I tried to lock into a specific build too early before. Now I focus on building a decent general deck first, with emphasis on getting def cards, and then decide what to do more specifically.
