If I recall, he has some type of muscular dystrophy. He's been at least wheelchair bound for a long long time, and I seem to remember that he has had some kind of lower limb amputation before. So yeah, his health has been terrible for a long time.

I should also point out that all his medical expenses are being covered by the government because he was in the Marine Corp. I seem to remember a thread of him complaining that his amputation got pushed backed because of some problem with the VA or something.
