Can't wait until we get to the point where pedestrians should be wearing helmets because there are zillions of things that are not cars that will gently caress you up. People trundling to the shops or the swimming pool at 8mph on a bike should not need a helmet. The idea that you should need special protective equipment to cycle for everyday journeys, is another thing that contributes to keeping people from taking bikes seriously as transport for everyday short trips. If you're on a race bike and travelling as fast as possible for leisure/fun/fitness, then yes, you should have a helmet because the speeds you can get to are going to be much more dangerous.

PA law provides for a crosswalk at all perpendicular curbs whether the crosswalk is painted or not, and in the absence of traffic control devices pedestrians have right of way. They're great places if you want to legally kill a pedestrian because regardless of what the law says you will never get charged for it unless you were drunk at the time.

Pittsburgh Fentanyl Cloud posted:Know what looks even dumber than a helmet? Brain damage If you're falling while travelling at jogging speeds, you've got problems that a helmet isn't going to solve. If your town or city is designed such that you feel you need a helmet to cycle at these speeds, then your town or city is probably badly designed. If you're trying to protect against injury from collisions with cars while cycling, then that helmet is not going to do anything when a 2000kg metal box squishes you into cat food and you probably shouldn't be trying to cycle there at all. And you assumed it's about "looking dumb", when it's about removing as much friction to cycle use for these common journeys as possible. Special gear beyond the bike and a lock, is just another thing to have to buy and remember to take and secure from thieves. All this stuff puts people off and as others have said, perpetuates the idea that it's inherently a dangerous pursuit.

I mean if I was walking and tripped/fell head first into a metal post like these I would be worried about how bad it might scramble my brains. Even a concussion isn't something trivial. poo poo happens, people fall, if you want to wear a helmet going at a jogging pace when on a bike, I would understand, but also I'm not going to wear a helmet jogging so I would understand not wanting to wear one? idk, it's not like a helmet is difficult to wear either

We had to rent a car for a trip down to the states this weekend and it sucked. Our hotel was across the street from a starbucks but because they were tearing up the five-lane stroad (to make it a seven-lane stroad lol) there was no sidewalk on the side with the starbucks, so I had to walk on the shoulder with cars slamming past just to get there. What really fucks me up about car-dependent infrastructure is how it's simultaneously self-perpetuating and self-defeating.

Walk through the grass. Even if there is a sidewalk, experienced pedestrians in Houston prefer to walk through parking lots. It's a lot safer than walking on a sidewalk that is right next to a road of cars speeding over 45 mph.

There was no grass, it was just fenced off construction and the road itself. There were big signs that were like "open during construction!" and absolutely no thought put into the fact that anyone might consider walking in.

Take my car in for service, they replace the cover gaskets, now the blower has oil fumes, take it in again, they can't figure it out, take it again for an oil change and for them to actually please fix this poo poo, it turns out it was the filler cap. Fine, that's 15 bucks. Drive it away, stop, restart engine, check engine light, camshaft position sensor. Honda want 170 bucks for that loving sensor. I can't even diagnose it myself unless I can find a multimeter in my tools or around the office. I have no faith in taking this to any mechanic because I'm sure I'm going to get it back with a different problem. I can't take of it myself because I just have a bare space in a parking lot with whatever tools I can find, and I only have like one day a week I'm not required to be somewhere (by car) to take care whatever its latest loving need is. If only I could just share a large vehicle with many other people, and this vehicle goes back to a garage at night with technicians who know what they're doing and have the right tools to take care of it, and they have extra ones in case that one needs to be fixed.
