pretending lgbtq+ stuff is a "brotherhood" thing is also followed by people who don't have that knowledge and context yelling at people who do, for being into "incest"

Really interesting writeup about LGBT+ slash fiction on china's internet post AO3's ban.

S02 Episode 8: Jokerfied on Literary Pornhub posted:

In 2020, the fanfiction site AO3 ("Archive of Our Own") was blocked in China. Long a safe haven for the country's diverse strands of erotica, fan works and danmei literature, its disappearance behind the Firewall was devastating. The furious drama surrounding the block spilled over into mainstream culture. When the dust settled, the question on everyone's mind was: what now?

Our focus here is on slash fiction, and the mind-bending ways in which fanfic writers and artists in China have adapted to the “post-AO3” era. In the shipyards of fandom below, you’ll learn about meal replacements, community-builder bots, and horny animal sounds.

I think there's some cynicism towards "China bans so and so" not only because there's a tendency to see a bunch of those news are usually dismantled in some way when it actually gets to people who actually interact with China (Genshin Impact changing the sexuality of some of the characters from LGBT to somewhat asexual comes to mind, Korean BL dramas getting a lot of traction on those markets), but its how they tend to be deployed in either this "Look at how stupid you babies are for liking gay stuff" or "You cannot criticism homophobia in the west, because-" fashion. Anyone can post that picture of the Raytheon socks with the rainbow and brown stripes and turn that into a rorsarch test of what are your intentions by showcasing that pic.

Jesse Faden is less of a girlboss and more of a "It's okay to be a weirdo" kinda lady. The main plot of Control wasn't the best but those characters were fantastic and Faden is one of my favorite protagonists in a video game.

I believe it was originally coined as a positive but it's since turned into a pejorative for just reinforcing traditional power structures. It's very "MORE FEMALE GUARDS AT GUANTANAMO," basically.

Contextual positivity. I'm find with assertive female characters taking control of their own lives. I'm not fine with Disney throwing up press junkets to pat themselves on the back for a job well done before telling us go watch their movies because they support the women Disney will readily throw under the bus if it's expedient.

Essentially the difference between a genuine grassroots effort to promote women versus cynical marketing targeting those grassroots efforts in order to make a brand more palatable to a broader audience.

I thought it was when one of the poster children for girlboss on social media got outed as being a horrifically abusive and toxic person to her employees. Like, the person who "girlboss" was coined for in some Vanity Fair article.

It was Sophia Amoruso the person who literally wrote the #Girlboss book.

Girlboss as a term is dying of Karen disease (misuse by garden variety misogyny in a way that eclipses the original meaning of the term.)

girlboss was always a cynical Lean In style bullshit term, the fact that it got made fun of wasn't misogyny considering most of the people doing poo poo like 'gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss' memes are in fact women who were the audience that poo poo was sold to and all. You can't 'misuse' it because it was always a complete fabrication.

I feel like "girlboss" has different meanings depending on one's general cultural setting. I most commonly see it in anti-MLM stuff used sarcastically to describe how MLMs prey on women who want/need a source of income (and in MLM stuff to describe women working in the MLM). I've also seen it used in feminism stuff to describe promoting women to positions of power while keeping an overall oppressive system in place. I've also seen it in office supply stores used without a hint of irony on various decorations, so apparently someone is still using it without irony.

It's one of those terms that, if you're not already connected to the group using them, have a kind of nebulous and unclear definition. (Kind of like how, apparently, a lot of people think "Karen" means "bossy lady who is a stickler for the rules and trying to ruin our fun :argh:")

I think it's hard to come up with a term that's critical of something associated with women without that term fairly quickly getting stretched into "women suck!" because of how language and culture work. It'd probably require a lot more strict policing of the language than most people really want to bother with.

Glad I found time to watch it. Nice little analysis if nothing earth shattering, but it's nice to have around since people really love to oversell how complicated the book is.

Since it's come up, it was weird to see in the comments to the video and the original tweet how many people insist that it was the scariest book that they'd ever read or something else about how crazy it was. And all I could think was that I read it, thought it was neat and experimental, read a few of the follow-up things online and moved on thinking that it was neat and immersive but that was about it.

I think the Navidson record is genuinely creepy and well done, and a lot of creepy pasta writers have been living off that idea since. Anything where something is bigger on the inside than the outside is a ticket to spooksville.

I don't think the book is *that* complicated, but it can definitely be overwhelming given the scattershot nature of some of the material (is what you're reading real, or are you reading a broken man's commentary on something that was fake, and maybe he's fake too), and that's before you get to the weird formatting. I liked it though, and found some of the other threads occasionally moving, or just outright sad.

On that note, the script he wrote for a TV adaptation was wild and somehow managed to work as an extension of the book itself.
