Duggan is a perfect example of that larger than life quality McMahon was good at honing back in the day. He was like this big, goofy and lovable cartoon Man-Bear who proudly loved America. The 2x4 just added to the charm. When I was 5 years old, it was a perfect addition to the crazy cast of characters, which in hindsight, worked well as a wrestling themed variety show catered towards kids.

And a perfect contrast on how Vinny Mac changed the perception of wrestlers. Cause if you ever saw heel Duggan in Mid-South whoa nelly thats 2 completely different wrestlers (heel Duggan was awesome too)

I've never known a) why was he "hacksaw"? as a nickname that always seemed a little odd to me and b) why he carried a two by four specifically? Were those two things related? Was he supposed to be a carpenter?

I'm sure he got the Hacksaw nickname for the same reason that Larry Hennig was The Axe and Greg Valentine was The Hammer--it sounds violent and nobody in the same territory was already using it. The 2x4, same thing--it was a weapon that works for wrestling that wasn't already somebody's gimmick, like Cornette's tennis racket. I think keeping the nickname and the weapon was one of those things in the 80s where your regional audience still mattered. The same reason Ricky Steamboat stayed Ricky Steamboat in the WWF, even though they immediately pushed him as a Japanese-American karate guy and never marketed him as a Samoan.

his gimmick was a dwarf from final fantasy. they stopped being used very much but they would say "lali-ho", "hi ho", "rally-ho" or similar as a word of greeting or friendship. this of course is altogether a reference to the dwarves from snow white. the saying is referenced in the name of a pornographic dwarven magazine from the 3D remake of Final Fantasy IV. The magazine, called Lustful Lali-Ho, is needed to obtain the Reach Augment. It is found in the Dwarven Castle. The protagonist, Cecil Harvey, is quite fond of it.

For a moment there I got Duggan and Kurrgan mixed up in my head and was VERY confused. "Wait, was THAT really Kurrgan's gimmick? I mean it's been 20 years so maybe I just forgot? I mean, he WAS big, but..."

Can somebody explain That's The Wall Brother! to me? I stopped watching WCW around the early 99 and I've only seen this meme crop up in the past five years or so but never understood it. I do remember Berlyn and The Wall though.

Duggan also said he picked the 2x4 because it was the easiest thing to just find at any arena, as opposed to like, carrying a big snake in a bag through the airport

For 4550 days, from October 11, 1988 through March 26, 2001, World Championship Wrestling existed through all of its highs and lows. Robocop saving Sting; Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal; Cactus Jack lost in Cleveland; the White Castle of Fear; the Alliance to End Hulkamania; Cheatum; the Shockmaster; Paul Roma as a Horseman; the Yeti; Drunk Scott Hall, and so much more has been discussed in this thread. This thread is now 4551 days old, meaning this thread has been around longer than WCW. This long awaited milestone reminds me of a long awaited WCW debut - Glacier. Vignettes introducing this futuristic fighter akin to a Mortal Kombat character ran for months before Glacier finally debuted on WCW Pro against a very worthy opponent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jB3C0fflMxQ
