Unpopular Vidjagame Opinion: I am sick to death of reading one more deadbrain post about Disco Elysium. Every time I read anything about this game I am that much more determined to never play it. OMG you can read so much text in this game with its trash-filter art style and edgy nihilistic protag! The whole fandom around this thing is maximum cringe, I don't need to personally handle the hot rock out of this pretentious fartsniffing hotzone to know I should stay far away from this particular existential sickness.

Well it's more than that I read some reviews and poo poo and realized this was a game I would probably regret buying by hour two. But years later goons still talking about this garbage.

Perhaps not. I got Disco Elysium for my birthday because I put it on my wishlist, because I had heard it was this amazing game with interesting design ideas such as equippable thoughts so I avoided watching any vidos or LP's, etc to avoid any kind of spoilers.

Then I played it for two hours. I found it contrived, condescending and pretentious and wanted to stab it, but instead I just uninstalled it and did my best to forget about it. That's my unpopular opinion. My other unpopular opinion is I don't like the Dark Souls/Demon Souls series at all, but at least I got to figure that out from watching other people play it.

Deeprock Galactic on the other hand? I never expected to love that game as much as I do but there's something about being a heavily armed, alcoholic dwarf just mining all those goodies that scratches an itch. Given my experiences that's not an unpopular opinion though.

Disco Elysium is hella cool conceptually in that it's a game where the protag is ostensibly controlled by their subconscious and the player can only try to fight it with their conscious mind but usually they're driven by base instinct. Just like real life. And I think that gives it the potential to do something very unique that no other game has ever really done.

But I don't know if it actually does that or delivers on the concept because all 3 times I've tried to play it I only made it through the tutorial apartment before realizing the protag was a sleazebag cop caricature of the most pointless and pathetic Drunk Uncle imaginable and all of the personality facets were written like weird edgy Tim Burton-meets-Jhonen Vasquez characters with a bunch of annoyingly transliterated dialog and gave up :ohdear:

I watched the pickle Rick episode of Rick and Morty yesterday, and was sort of blown away. Not by how good it is (though it is actually pretty good) but by how much the actual pickle part is a piss of itself, like, it's purposefully asinine and stupid and poo poo. And then you have loving Susan Sarandon in the payoff clarifying that it's not ironically cool or funny, it is a terrible and useless and failed assertion. Like it's one of the only times Rick truly 'fails', is how poo poo it is.

And all these loving gently caress head fans are like "YEAAAHH! PICKLE RICK!"

Disco Elysium owns so much, one of the greatest RPGs ever. It took like 20 years for a dev to notice the combat was by far the worst part of Baldurs Gate/Fallout style RPGs and did something about it. It's right up there with Suikoden II and Final Fantasy IX.

I don't make good decisions.

Its also to help my mom troubleshoot the game as she had questions how it worked as she's playing it right now so I gotta boot it up to answer her questions. The last game she played was minesweeper

How did she even hear about it.

with stuff like disco elysium, and adventure/point and click games in general, i always have this desire to be engrossed in one of them but i can very rarely ever get there. i just zone out because the process of interacting with anything is so boring, and what ever good stuff there is i don't find or there isn't enough of to offset the boredom of all the middling stuff.

it's similar to how i go back and try to play old jrpgs i missed when i was a kid. there's a moment i'm looking for which might just not be accessible to me anymore except in my memories, and i'll have to go about reaching that moment through other things now.

My mom is a registered socialist and used to vote straight ticket communist and is into up and coming rap artists and youth movements. Her circle of people mentioned it and when she asked me about it and I was like "oh its like a choose your own adventure book" she thought she should give it a whirl.

Poor woman had no idea how to progress the text at the start of the game, like literally stuck at the first screen she's that disconnected from gaming.

Disco Elysium huffing its own farts is a valid criticism but it gets away with it because it's genuinely funny, well written, sets up an engaging mystery, I am 100% not a fan of stories in games (i play dota and rocket league all day) but I wanted to know everything about Disco Elyisums hosed up cynical word.
