Babe Magnet posted:And, also, to be fair, the Souls series is also a product of its time. They just did that thing where they release more than one game in two decades to build up good will lol. People hated Demon's Souls when it came out. When Demon's Souls and Dark Souls came out, it was at a time when the market couldn't be further from their philosophy. You had big publications like Eurogamer with articles titled "Should videogames even have boss battles anymore?" There will always be developers who go against the grain, especially in the indie world. Babe Magnet posted:Yeah Kenshi is like M&B and Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress and all that because it's all those games at the same time... more or less. Kenshi is a sandbox but part of its charm is it's trying to be the most sandbox, and mostly succeeds. It's the kid playing with his toys wanting to make the Ultimate Video game that has all of the features of his favorite games and movies and you can go out and do them any time you want and also there are ninjas and dinosaurs, but that kid actually did it this time lol Kenshi is essentially a real RPG. You go out to an unfamiliar world and do whatever you want to do and be whatever you want to be. In contrast, WRPGs are essentially "choose your own adventure books", while JRPGs are like a "manga you can play."

Yeah that was my second part, about Demon's Souls being not very well received. I don't know what I meant by the first part, about it being a product of its time. It's been a long day lol. I got there eventually.

Does anybody else tend to have midgame characters with way higher Toughness than any other stat because their best attribute is getting the poo poo beaten out of them?

Bogart posted:Does anybody else tend to have midgame characters with way higher Toughness than any other stat because their best attribute is getting the poo poo beaten out of them? For me it's usually athletics because my stupid gimmicky playstyle usually involves less fighting on safe home turf and more avoiding or retreating from any enemy that can't be favorably cheesed, on account of spending the early game traveling long distances to explore and sneak around in gnarlier regions. Which makes any given combat calculus resolve to a binary of either a successful ambush/curbstomp, or a total party wipe. "Ugh why did I think it would be funny to build a farm in Venge, this place suuuucks"

i've had kenshi on my to play list for years, basically ever since it came out since I had the dev blog on my old rss reader, but what made it click for me was realizing it's a squad based morrowind starting week 2 and i keep picking up a limbless bandit, putting him in jail and lockpicking him out

Oh yeah, I meant 'main' stats. Obviously, you've found something that works -- having a horrific torturedoll to train on is a valid strategy for many skills in Kenshi.

I find it odd that all of these job mods like gate guard, town recruiter, or bodyguard pay like absolute dog poo poo. Yes I protected you for a full day as I escorted you to town and fought off dozens of creatures that could have tested you limb to limb. Therefore me receiving 300 cats is perfectly acceptable. It’s especially a slap on the face due to how broke my profitable scavenging, tech hunting, and thievery are.

I don't know why the vanilla mercenaries continue on, charging only a couple thousand Cats, just to frequently get destroyed by whatever they run into. "Ah drat, half your squad lost arms and limbs. Whelp, here's 3000 cats, thanks bunch."

whats the best ui mod that's close to the vanilla but more readable? Im using dark ui now and it trades, I dunno, kenshi aesthetics for maximum readability

It's kind of just Dark UI or nothing. I just pretend that it's a fancy Skeleton invention as opposed to the garbage a Hiver would sell you. I wonder how much Strength you need to break locks or shackles. I don't think I've ever seen a character say that they could do it when I prompt them.

so im hanging out by the little outpost south of Squin building a teeny little shack and some other stuff in my first ever game what do i do? I've been making some ok money lifting stuff off the bodies the ninja guards leave around and mining and selling copper but i wanna kung fu some assholes and the bandits are not loving around! Plus they want 2k cats every two days so i said gently caress that. i saved right before hand since i didnt think i'd have any other options other than "OK!" or "gently caress OFF" and "gently caress OFF" wasnt the right choice to say when they were all around me. should i just snag a rando from the bar and go off in a direction? should i use a weapon or can i go all Bruce Lee i chose the wanderer start since i think it'd be fun to start off alone then find some battle buddies but tbh the damage system is very imposing to me and i see i have to get my rear end beat to be strong which yeah cool ok but who the gently caress do i fight? i saw a goat buuuut even that was like "i wll gently caress you up dude" i mean im perfectly happy playing mining miner lady on the big hill but i feel like these bandits are probably just gonna come back with even more and idk if they'll wait cant i just lead them to the outpost? ohhhh poo poo brb

kenshi is the sandboxiest of the sanbox games, there isn't really a wrong answer. go lose some fights! get (partially) eaten by blood spiders or cannibals! maybe get enslaved! all are completely reasonable and even mechanically rewarding things you can do in Kenshi

you can get started by getting your rear end stomped buy guys with sticks, those generally (usually) (most of the time) don't result in amputations, but fyi actually getting a limb amputated is itself an immense bump to Toughness

Just start fighting random people who are a bit higher level than you. Try to include it in some sort of “quest” you make up. Like robbing bandits/nobles and being some sort of Robinhood common people. If you get caught, it’s fighting time. Or just be a bandit yourself and mug some random passbyers. Get exp and take their stuff.

It's been about 2 years since I last played but places I can remember: - Burning forest lab (not 100% sure on this one tbh) - Lab in the very northwest in the "iron coast/trail" area where theres lots of broken security spiders around - Lab on fishman island - The lab protected by the Holy nation, Narkos trap - Some should be sold at the scraphouse - Ashland domes - Tech Lab in Shun

^^ Yeah there's A LOT of them in The Ashlands but if you're at the point of the game where you're still trying to figure out how to get them, you may not be ready for the area lol. you gotta visit the Big Important Tech City Black Desert (specifically the giant Scraphouse attached to it) in the middle of the acid-rain hell swamp Deadlands. Bring shoes! to buy them. They spawn in high level locked chests generally, in ancient factory/warehouse tiles. Check near the Beak Thing Crater in the bottom left of the map and the Deadlands in the middle-ish for some. For guarantees on finding them, you want Ancient labs, not just any labs. I know there's not much of a difference but you'll know you're in the right place if someone with high stats, a name, and a meitou weapon is trying to kill you lol Here's some hints for you: Eastern Island Spider Factory on the Forbidden Isle Southern Island Island Lab on Fishman Island Death Lasers Tower of Abuse in Venge Holy Nation's Only Tech Lab Narko's Trap, east of Blister Hill Babe Magnet fucked around with this message at 08:13 on May 27, 2022 |

Decided to do a run where I only recruit prisoners. I think there must be something busted with Reaver slaves; even the ones that give you the good messages ("can you open the cage, too?" etc) will never actually leave the cage once they're free. Little bit annoying since I started in the east specifically so I could bust some reavers and get their better-than-average stats.

# ? May 30, 2022 00:10 |

yeah the Reaver behavior seems like there is some pretty interesting ideas but not really finished. I modded in a start where you begin as a small group (3 or something) of Reaver "conscripts" to see if that was reasonable, it's so much harder than the Holy Nation slave start.

I've seen this game in the steam store for years and always passed on it because the screenshots made it look like dogshit. I finally bought it a few days ago and have been playing it when I can and holy poo poo, it is the jank of all jank and doesn't look that good but it is amazing and fun as hell, I've been a moron for years.

It has also hit that sweet point where lots of big mods are complete and even good levels of compatibility/patches. This is my fourth time getting back to it over the last few years and it is still gold. Though I think some combination of my mod cocktail this time broke interactions at my base with AI/wanderers. Wouldn't be kenshi without it!

Despite the dated graphics, character models, textures etc, I still hold that Kenshi has some of the most amazing backgrounds and vistas I've ever seen in a game. There are newer AAA games that don't even come close to conveying 'epic landscape' like Kenshi does.

Y'all never stop talking about this I should probably try it again. Read some of this thread, then I saw the review on Steam that says "Like Animal Crossing for autistic men" and pulled the trigger. So I booted up my game with zero research and set up a camp about halfway to the next landmark on the map (basically as soon as I was out of the threshold of the starting town). And yeah, wow these graphics are offensive. Made like four trips buying and ferrying materials back and forth to build this thing. Finally got enough materials, start building it. Looks like it will take a second so I go get some food. Come back and I'm being ravaged by a party of wandering nomads. Unable to escape I'm struck down and (very) slowly bleed to death. \fin
