Opopanax posted:I did. I don't really care for card based games, they tend to be a bit too random and I'm just assuming there's going to be a bunch of loot box stuff involved. They've said there won't be, please don't argue from faith. But then again, it IS a triple A game, perhaps it's not unreasonable to assume it'll be there if you know nothing about the game other than "cards" and "marvel." Yet, everyone always, and only says "there's cards in it. Bad." Nothing about the characters, the story, the cheesy writing. Just. Cards. Praxis should be allowed to experiment. Games that are made because the Devs want to make them end up at least slightly better than ones where the publisher/lead dev pointed a gun to their head. It's why Skyrim is just okay, but Fallout 76 was utter poo poo. Bethesda cares about TES, they BARELY care about Fallout. They would've gone with Starfield to begin with if they hadn't gotten the license back in the dark ages. (If it turns out Praxis really was forced to add card stuff to the game then ignore this post completely.)

Playing Blacksad: Under the Skin and it's actually enjoying. Especially the moment where you sit at a poker table trying to remember stuff about the person you're impersonating. It's kinda mind palace scene where you walk around in your flashback trying to find the relevant clues. Plus you can cause the death of a character who's running a child sex slave operation. There's also lots of ways to die and the game specifically sets up traps for you: There's one scene where a crime boss is about to shoot someone and you're in the same room, hiding. You get an option to keep hiding or try to save his life. If you choose to try and save his life you immediately get shot. If you choose to keep hiding another option comes up where you can choose between continue to hide or risk your life to save his life. If choose the latter you get gunned down again. This keeps up until the crime boss shoots the guy. Alhazred fucked around with this message at 15:42 on Jun 13, 2022 |

What if we called them "abilities" and they're little triangle tiles on the UI. You refresh a random ability every round, and have to pick an ability loadout! See, now it's not cards.

From what I gather, Midnight Suns plays quite similar to Fights in Tight Spaces, which is an absolute blast to play. So I am sort of interested in it. Also, the character building and chatting with those characters sounds fun.

Calaveron posted:The Arkham series cobbled a gigantic pair of shoes that video-game developers are still trying to fill I mean that isn't even really the thing here. There is a ton of room in the superhero space to have something besides action games. There are plenty of those and even more coming out. Variety is good and even if not every single game appeals to you that is going to be the price of variety.

I’m kind of warming up to the card game idea. Like, I was going to have to try a game with Magik and the Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider regardless, but this might actually be fun. Definitely going to wait until after the release day reviews, but the rpg elements have me intrigued. Plus, you get a pet hellhound.

This game was... Interesting. But I feel it fell prey to the TellTale curse of choice in a point-and-click adventure, even if they did address it in the game (particularly with the last choice).

ImpAtom posted:Wait seriously? Fights in Tight Spaces is loving amazing so that's good news. Just from what I understand of the description. I'm not sure how much environment manipulation there will be and if you'd be able to predict the enemies movement. Of course, those are key components of FITS, but other than that, the basic concept of standing on a field and using those cards for attacks and movements seems to be the same. In the worst case it will play like a turn based RPG with a randomized lives at each turn, which does not sound all that good, so I hope that they'll use the concept to it's full extend.

It seems like each hero has a deck of cards that represent their moves/abilities and are usually pretty thematically linked as well. You go into a mission and it shuffles all of them together and you draw 5 every turn, you can play 3 of them and move 1 hero once each turn, cards that have you attacking do the movement for you so the single move is just to position for piercing beam attacks or aoe or whatever. There's a bunch of keywords that activate certain things as well (so like a fast card gives you back a card play if you kill someone with whatever the effect on the fast card is). Each hero also has a special card that ties into a unique mechanic for them, usually driven by a pool of hero points that you get for KO'ing enemies. The "mook" enemies all die in one shot from literally anything that does damage, there's bigger minions that have actual health bars and usually special effects/abilities and then the big bosses that have multiple health bars. The environmental stuff so far looks pretty simple, knocking enemies into explosives, electrical stuff or portals into hell created by Ghost Rider, that kinda thing. It does look like there's some advance knowledge of who is targeting who on the next turn, there's some taunt abilities and some enemies have a countdown where it ticks down for every card you play and they get an action straight away on your turn if it ticks down. All the gameplay videos I've seen so far look like it's taking part in city streets or inside/on top of buildings entirely, there's nothing that looks like you can knock a guy through a wall from the street into a convenience store or big multi level indoor environments which if true is a bit disappointing and the one thing I'd say "no that is something from X-Com you should endeavor to keep in making a superhero turn based combat game" personally. Could just be the gameplay is all from very early in the game and the environments start getting bigger and more permissive later on though, I kinda doubt it though.

ImpAtom posted:That's a really weird thing to say because you can apply it to a vast number of video games because they are in fact largely digital games. I guess and I get your point so let me clarify. I just meant if I want to play chess, poker or Settlers of Catan, I'd just rather do that since I like the tacit and social elements of it. I get different rewards and look for other types of pleasurable feedback out of table top games, if that makes sense. I like the art, moving the pieces around, the back and forth at the table, looking up rules. It's kind of, to me, the difference between playing a D&D campaign vs WoW. For the most part, when I play video games, I do it to be able to things that I can't ordinarily pull off or do. Like swinging through Manhattan on a web, skate boarding through an airport, blasting my way out of an alien stronghold or quarterbacking a football team. I can play MTG or backgammon whenever I have some friends around. Sometimes, certain CPU games are good at handling some of the more complex rules of a TT game, which is nice, but I find myself getting bored with them quicker than a game night with the guys.

BiggerBoat posted:I guess and I get your point so let me clarify. Fair enough. I'm a big fan of RPGs and I genuinely like the moment-to-moment choice gameplay that comes from both tabletop and digital turn-based games a lot. Even if I can play them offline (which in the era of COVID and 90% of my friends living in other states/countries is never) the digital version tends to be more fun because it remains snappy. Tabletop in RL is fun to me as a facilitation of social interaction but in terms of actually playing games I prefer digital every time.

One good thing about Gotham Knights is that for co op they aren't limiting your character selection so you can have an all Nightwing team up if you want. Also I've been playing Miles Morales and because they made Peter younger and Miles older there's only a 7 year age gap between the two of them which seems kind of low.

I mean, in the original Ultimate comics version there was only a 3-5 year gap at most. Miles gets powers at 13 like a week before a still teenage Peter Parker bites it.

Peter is more like an older brother in the game. He's still a mentor, but they feel closer in the game than in the comics.

Peter's new face in Sony's PlayStation 5's Playstation 4's Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered legit looks younger than Miles'. He takes baby face to a whole new level. Like if you stuck his head on a child's body it wouldn’t look out of place at all

I chuckle when I think about PS5 Peter's face because it took the immense power of the PS5 to whitewash a white man.

You can’t even balance them since they’re too easy but also monotonous. Because if you expand on them then it's just tedium for tedium's sake but if you make them shorter then might as well just make them cutscenes. I hated the final sequence where you’re straight up pixel hunting for the stupid key to get into Harry's room, just trying to find whatever to tell you whatever so you could get into wherever

A problem with both of the Spider-Man games is how wonky the stealth is. Like you're barely on another plane from the enemies and it treats it like you're invisible to them. It can be especially goofy in cutscenes.
