divabot has a good twitter thread speculating on which big exchange could be the first to collapse/rugpull. I suspect this bit is true, but I'm fascinated by why this might be the case:
https://twitter.com/davidgerard/status/1537122763449704449
My speculation as to why Kraken might have more cushion and is less panicked than Coinbase: Kraken's not a public company, Coinbase is. Once Coinbase had their IPO and the founders/management handed the bag to a new set of investors, the goal became keeping the investors happy by goosing the share price upwards. The easiest way to do that is by promising explosive growth, and if you're telling folks that you're in the process of expanding rapidly, well then you have to hire new employees and spend on ads to do that, don't you?

Kraken, on the other hand, has never had to satisfy the stock market, and could do what Coinbase should have done were it meant to be an unsexy-but-profitable business rather than a glorified investor scam: quietly make a steady profit by taking a cut of all the business on their casino floor, and not blow that profit on staffing up for insane promises of growth that will never come.

Jesse Powell, who leads the crypto exchange Kraken, has challenged the use of preferred pronouns, debated who can use racial slurs and called American women “brainwashed.”

Jesse Powell, a founder and chief executive of Kraken, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, recently asked his employees, “If you can identify as a sex, can you identify as a race or ethnicity?”

He also questioned their use of preferred pronouns and led a discussion about “who can refer to another person as the N word.”

And he told workers that questions about women’s intelligence and risk appetite compared with men were “not as settled as one might have initially thought.”

I mean, if we posit that the Kraken guys actually understand what they're doing (skimming off of a scam-riddled, negative-sum economy with a business that's even more exploitative than a real casino), it follows that you'd have to be a real piece of poo poo to keep doing that and be able to sleep at night

i mean, the reader is sort of lead to draw their own conclusions which is always dumb because

quote:

Jesse Powell, a founder and chief executive of Kraken, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, recently asked his employees, “If you can identify as a sex, can you identify as a race or ethnicity?” "The answer is that these are not mutually exclusive, and identification by sex is, in general terms, incorrect," he said.

He also questioned their use of preferred pronouns and led a discussion about “who can refer to another person as the N word.” "Nobody should refer to another person with this term within this workspace," he said, "although what they do on their own time is sadly not for me to decide."

And he told workers that questions about women’s intelligence and risk appetite compared with men were “not as settled as one might have initially thought.” "Men seem to tolerate far more risk and volatility. This does not suggest intelligence"

but of course none of these rhetoricals are actually answered that way

So Matt Damon was the peak of the pump phase, orchestrated by financial institutions to bring in clueless money, and this is the dump phase. What happens to crypto after this? There's really nothing keeping banks from repeating the same pump, probably targeting a different demographic next time, like maybe clint eastwood, someone to bring in affluent boomers, especially conservative ones. Or maybe we'll get some real regulations now that capital has had their chance to shear the sheep. Without scams and ponzis there's very little actual value to the technology, the industry under regulation could become pretty small and stagnant.

I wonder if non-true believers are ever going to trust crypto again after this massive crash, but then again conservative boomers are unsophisticated and easy to manipulate. I'll be on the lookout to see if and how crypto starts getting pushed in the right wing sphere.

the big banks already have everyone's money via retail credit, mortgages and the stock market. I think they'd rather sit back and be the sane alternative, maybe one of them will actually start paying interest even?
