Stereotype posted:i just saw a tiktok about how we should paint all the roads white Cool pavement revealed lower surface temperatures at all times of the day versus traditional asphalt. Cool pavement had an average surface temperature 10.5 to 12 degrees Fahrenheit lower than traditional asphalt at noon and during the afternoon hours. Surface temperatures at sunrise averaged 2.4 degrees Fahrenheit lower. Sub-surface temperatures averaged 4.8 degrees Fahrenheit lower in areas treated with cool pavement. Nighttime air temperature at six feet of height was on average 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit lower over cool pavement than on the non-treated surfaces. The human experience of heat exposure at noon and the afternoon hours was 5.5 degrees Fahrenheit higher due to surface reflectivity, but similar to walking on a typical concrete sidewalk. Surface solar reflectivity declined over 10 months from a range of 33 to 38 percent to a range of 19 to 30 percent across all eight neighborhoods. Untreated asphalt has a reflectivity of only 12 percent.

hifi posted:Cool pavement revealed lower surface temperatures at all times of the day versus traditional asphalt. yeah but what are you painting it with? some weird plastic poo poo probably. also what's the reflectivity of whatever used to be there before humans came and bulldozed it all? it was probably plants so they were causing an evapotranspirative effect that you can't mimic with a pure reflector but painting all roads white is still probably better than doing nothing. i bet we've lost more reflective white ice surface area at the poles than all the road surfaces in the world combined tho haha wrecked

To be clear these are surface temperatures, not air temperatures. Surfaces at southern latitudes, with hot weather, clear sky, and near the annual solar insolation peak can get to 170F (like a metal playground slide). Phoenix is piloting cool pavement. Kind of mixed results really. https://www.phoenix.gov/newsroom/street-transportation/2064 Also note that in the Vegas example, the urban non-street areas are a lot cooler than the surrounding desert. The oasis effect is real.

according to wikipedia there are 65 million kilometers of roads in the world, and if you say the average road width is 6 meters then that's 384 million square kilometers of road area you could paint white. last year's polar sea ice extent was 410 million square kilometers smaller than the 1980 to 2010 average.
