More dispatches from the Brand Eating front lines! Applebee's Offers Half-Price, Late-Night Appetizers Deal for a Limited Time One of the comments posted:The internet turned a lot of people into judgmental tools. I once saw "Die Another Day" with a friend of mine and we both enjoyed it leaving the theater. A few weeks later, the movie came up and all of a sudden, he claimed he hated it. I was baffled, then I Googled it online or went to the IMDB boards and discovered that a bunch of geeks decided they hated it, so everyone else must hate it. A lot of this starts with one celebrity or pundit too, like Patton Oswalt or Kevin Smith on a podcast. If you're wondering what the context is...there is none!

I love Casefiles because there's no humor in it, and very little wallowing. The host tells the story in depth, with consequences, in a pleasant Australian accent. I enjoy it especially because many of the crimes aren't American or English; I'm not hearing about, say, Ted Bundy for the tenth time. If anybody knows of a non-wallowing historic true crime series (Crippen, Dr. Harold Shipman, Belle Gunness), let me know?

That's what I liked about Forensic Files. It goes into the technical details of the investigation and what it figured out with minimal misery porn or gossipy bullshit. It's basically Air Disasters with people instead of planes.

They're different species, just the same genus. Although several genera in the family got mashed into citrus in a move I really don't agree with, I mean I can see Fortunella and Microcitrus getting the axe, but Poncerus? Come on guys, Poncerus has different leaf morphology and it thrives in temperate climates. There's one growing at the White House for Christ's sake, does that sound like it should be lumped into a family of tropical fruit that die when there's a mild frost?

I feel like this is a topic that comes up extremely rarely, but when it does, you have Big Opinions about sharp fruits. Edit: just to say, I am 100% the same. You get me on my home ground and I WILL correct you about common misconceptions. I had a very nice colleague years ago who got so annoyed about people being casual about trees that he made a whole powerpoint presentation about the differences between pine and fir trees. It was very informative! Pookah has a new favorite as of 21:54 on Jun 17, 2022 |

I enjoy it especially because many of the crimes aren't American or English; I'm not hearing about, say, Ted Bundy for the tenth time. Criminal with Phoebe Judge is pretty good at doing non-exploitative looks at crimes. It's more about the people involved in crimes (on all sides of it) and how they relate to it. She's very Lous Theroux with it - no judgement, no drama, just people. And she looks at a big range of types of crime and people - sky-jackers is a great episode, there's one on the development of underground lotteries in black communities, she interviews trauma surgeons etc. My only issue is that sometimes her deliberate hands-off lack of analysis feels a bit.....cowardly? Or just un-thorough. Like she'll describe the racial motivated framing of people, have an itnerviewer who repeatedly calls the Chicago PD racist, and then that's it. No real push to try and contextualise this single incident of racism against the massive background of racist policing. Sometimes you gotta call out systemic problems.

I was a weird edgelord teen who liked reading about serial killers, a hobby that seemed pretty evenly gender distributed among weird edgelords at the time in my limited experience. I have absolutely no high horse to stand on here, but even then it would have felt really weird to go to like a true crime podcast fan convention, but smarter people than me have unpacked that. Also I really like the Scam Goddess podcast, part of its marketing is basically "true crime but not just murders" basically. Plus we're all a lot more likely to be scammed than murdered from the perspective of learning about things to protect yourself, and seeing different scams targeting different communities even if the basic outline is the same feels a lot more interesting from even that detached entertainment perspective than an endless deluge of (largely) women being abused and murdered by either family members or strangers.

Thr thing that irks me most about "women shouldn't read true crime! Women shouldn't like Twilight! Women shouldn't consume questionable media!" is the fact that people are pretty much saying women lack self awareness and are as impressionable as a 6 year old. Exploring darkness through fiction is loving fine, dudes. Women don't need you to save them from themselves.

I think that's what "saves" me: I'm just as happy to read about a scam like Theranos as I am a grisly serial murder. My favorite true-crime subgenre is "Spouse/partner tries and fails to hire hitman", those are always funny and easier to laugh at, since nobody actually died. I absolutely agree, but I feel like "women shouldn't be reading this" is different than "girls (aka kids) shouldn't be reading this". Adults are (ideally!) better at separating fiction from reality/"lessons" to be learned than kids are...most of the time. Read After Burning has a new favorite as of 22:37 on Jun 17, 2022 |

Yeah there's a difference between 'this genre sucks and is exploitative if the victims it claims to be speaking for, and intentionally causes negative feedback loops of fear and anxiety while being aimed at least partially at women' and 'women are too dumb to listen to true crime'.
