The 22H2 installer from within WU insists on TPM 2.0. Goddamn. --edit: Wow, that's mean. It's just a gatekeeper app. As soon it detects your system to be compliant (i.e. me reenabling fTPM), it closes and tells WU to go ahead, which then takes back over. Yeah, Release Preview. Also, the drat update blew up my manual DNS settings. It suddenly lists the 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 ones from Google instead of pointing towards my Adguard server. wtf --edit: This dumb motherfucker exploded the network configuration in relation to Hyper-V (again) during a major upgrade. Why the gently caress does this keep happening? Also, this: How about telling me/highlighting the offending setting, or giving me a drat reason for the issue, you twatwaffles at Microsoft?! About 15 odd years ago I had to change my DNS settings for a while because my ISP's were messed up. Is there any advantage to using Google or Cloudflare DNS settings now, given that my ISP servers are working normally?

WattsvilleBlues posted:Is there any advantage to using Google or Cloudflare DNS settings now, given that my ISP servers are working normally? Google, cloudflare, et al, have good support for DNS-over-HTTPS or -TLS which is good for privacy but also prevents some possible (but unlikely IRL) attacks. Most ISPs are spotty on that. Your ISP also likely does data collection of DNS queries, possibly just in general but also possibly tied to "anonymous" accounts that are easily de-anonymized to you. Cloudflare I'm particular has a pretty good privacy commitment for their DNS. ISPs are very often prone to do lovely hijacking of non-existent domains to serve ads instead of returning NXDOMAIN like they should. IMO this is the best reason to use better DNS resolvers. If you have a good ISP that does things right then you don't need to switch. (Also tell them to expand to my neighborhood.)

I think in the past there could have been an issue with using a third-party DNS where you'd be sent to a server other than your ISPs on-net cache for things like Netflix, though now I think that's all handled via anycast so not as relevant now.

New fun windows 11 experience: StartMenuExperienceHost.exe and SearchHost.exe crashing and re-launching every two seconds, making using the start menu impossible. The fix: using StartAllBack's replacement start menu. I have no idea what the hell is actually causing that, but it's pretty annoying!

The fix: using StartAllBack's replacement start menu. update: I did a system restore and everything was fine again until tonight, when windows randomly blue-screened while watching twitch. then it kept blue screening when trying to boot, so I reset my bios and it still blue screened (even when trying to boot into safe mode) and now my computer won't even post lol. Guess I have a lot of troubleshooting in store for me tomorrow... editing in another update because I don't want to triple-post with what's now a mostly off-topic thing: I went to turn on my computer again, and after a few failed boots, it started up just fine? I reset the BIOS except this time it's full defaults (no XMP or anything). No blue screens or weird behavior all day. The fact that it refused to post for a while last night tells me that there's some kind of lurking hardware issue, but I have no way to troubleshoot it if I can't reproduce it... Maybe I need to reseat the GPU or something (I did take it out to plug in a new storage drive a week ago). Dr. Video Games 0031 fucked around with this message at 00:34 on Jun 12, 2022 |

Thanks for the DNS chat. I'm with BT in the UK so not sure what they're like tracking users. I'm a bit wary of using Google's DNS because privacy. Posted from my Android phone.

BT have (officially) stepped back from any tracking stuff they were trialling, and that was probably a decade ago now. Even if you change DNS servers it's still all happening in plaintext, so if you're concerned about that you need to be looking at using DNS over HTTPS, either locally on your clients or by deploying a DNS server in your network and having that resolve external addresses using DoH.

I just noticed my laptop was starting to get a bit toasty even though I wasn't doing anything intensive. Turns out it started to download and install an update while on battery. I went through all the update settings and apparent it's possible to disable updates on metered connections, but not while the computer is running from battery power. What the hell. Does anyone know if there's a registry hack for this or something? I tried to google it of course but doesn't seem to pop up.

Nice stealth energy saving measure. The last big update (or so) dropped my display timeout from 10 to 5 minutes (I guess via the default balanced power plan). I was already wondering whether I was having blackouts or something when quickly going to the shitter and getting back to a blank screen, which never used to happen before.

If you don't like being surprised by updates, check for them manually when you start Windows. If your updates risk overheating your machine, you have other problems. Some software is more demanding. Open up your laptop and blow away dust. If you really want to turn off updates because you hate them, ok, it's your machine. Best keep your network and data as secure as possible, as you'll be behind everyone else in terms of security. Edit: it's me. Well thats interesting. The only issue I've had with my current build from 2019 is an issue where it wouldn't resume from sleep properly, or sometimes it would happen on a cold boot as well. Problem with the video card, hasn't happened since I RMA'd. I basically have no problems with my other PCs in the house. My golden rules: Always update, make a habit of checking once a week or so. Note that optional hardware updates may be hidden in the "optional" section now. Update your BIOS. Windows seems to be getting better at including that on its own but check your manufacturer support page every few months or so just in case. Absolutely 100% abstain from any trashware, that being literally anything that claims to speed up/optimize/clean your system. Windows defender is all you need. Stick Ublock Origin on your browser as well. Please stop using utorrent. Qbittorrent is a good client but there may be better alternatives out there. I really wish it could update in-app instead of pointing me to the website to download the newest version. And ofc, do your new Windows installs cleanly from USB using media creation tool. You dont need to do these every 6-9 months anymore, either. Unless you really gently caress things up you are pretty much good forever unless you really feel the urge to do some spring cleaning. Also, please dont use hard disks as boot disks anymore. C'mon people.

mobby_6kl posted:Yes I guess this is the way. Is it possible to upgrade with one of those ebay keys? Yes. Note that "notify for updates" isn't free of annoyance either: MS defender updates are included in windows update, and those frequently update once a day and sometimes twice. So you will see the "updates available" pop-up a lot. (I used "auto download, notify to install" for quite a while back in `17-`18 when W10 was really bad about rebooting without asking for permission. Nothing bad happened to me, I just made sure to do the updates once a week. But this was also a desktop so I wasn't connecting to strange networks ever. And I'm reading tech sites so I see the news when there's a MS zero day patch now situation.)

Something about the newest cumulative update (KB5014668) is tasking the hell out of my brother's 2700x, eventually causing his PC to lock up. Uninstalling the update solves the issue. I installed the same update on my PC with a 3600 and am having no problems.

After the last GA update (as far as I can ascertain), applications seem to always open up in the background unless I open them from the start menu. E.g. I have the Files file browser which is bound to win+E, and it now opens in the background. I also use Fluent Search as an application launcher, and if I launch the built-in calculator from that (or the button on my keyboard) it launches in the background.

I got a Win11 laptop from Costco a while back and it's great, except for one thing. I like to put it to sleep instead of shutting diwn, but it doesn't want to go to sleep. Like the screen will come back up on a hair trigger. Taking my hand off the mouse after clicking sleep is enough to wake it. Are there any settings I could tweak? A way to get a good old hibernate state?
