English Football Fans go WOKE: Study finds three quarters of footie fans WOULD NOT throw a bench through a restaurant window when travelling abroad and two-thirds have walked up the shop and only bought a 4-pack of Stella, drinking only one or two on returning home and not engaging in domestic violence, nearly half say they have petted a Cat and ENJOYED IT.

Correct, but realistically they can't do poo poo if everyone does it. British trade unionism would be a hell of a lot more effective if it were more willing to embrace illegalism. Oh no, we can't strike in an effective way because the people in charge have told us we're not allowed to. Well no poo poo. What do you think collective solidarity is for, if not to put the authorities in a position where the letter of the law doesn't matter because you're powerful enough to enforce your demands regardless.

In Japan (I am led to believe) transport workers often take industrial action by refusing to sell tickets or enforce fares - they still turn up for duties (and, crucially, still draw wages) but the public travel for free. AIUI this arose as a way of circumventing the "ordinary people can't get to work because of entitled trade unionists holding the economy to ransom" line and because in much of Japan if mass transit doesn't function neither does society. The railways and buses are mostly privatised, so a 'fare-free' strike hits the employers right in the bottom line and usually forced the government to step in and arbitrate.

I read somewhere/sometime that a British union considered a similar action at one point but the legal advice was that it would open up strikers to various breech of contract/dereliction of duty/gross misconduct charges because under British employment law you either withdraw all your labour or you perform your duties. You can't oversee a station but wave people through open ticket barriers, and you can't do all the duties of a train guard/conductor except checking tickets and enforcing byelaws.

I know it happened in Ireland years ago (I am thinking a good 15-20 years ago) with the bus routes. I understand it was quite successful as management came back to the table really fast as a result. It also gets massive public support ("Of course I support the bus drivers. They saved me the best part of a tenner for this week.")

Now there has been similar strikes since that haven't used that model. (Just going on strike, not providing a service and that passes off the average commuter.)

I think, looking at the Irish legal system, if you got all your union members to do it, and the management resort to calling the guards to report you for theft (which they likely couldn't since there would be too many people and the guards aren't going to go to every bus route to charge individual drivers. But let's say they did.)
So if you got charged for Theft, under the Irish system it is a hybrid offence. Which means it get's prosecuted Summerily in the District Court (lowest level. Judge alone) unless the DPP or the Judge decide that it's serious enough to be tried on Indictment (in the higher Circuit Court. Meaning Judge and Jury, harsher penalties.)
But due to Theft being a specifici hybrid offence, the accused can opt to place themselves on their right of election and be sent forward to the Circuit Court to be tried by Judge and Jury.

If you could get striking workers to agree that if they are charged they sweat it out and make it go to the Circuit Court (that's a big if. It's a reverse Prisoners Dilema writ large) the number of cases going to the Circuit would likely put huge stress on the system. Not to mention that the trials would be conducted as huge media circuses designed to appeal to the juries sensibility of convicting their fellow workers.
There is a lot of moving parts, and it would require nerves of steel to enforce but it could work.

That being said the management at the companies would probably look at going after some alternative method (internal discipline actions over criminal conduct. Or seek to recover the costs via Civil debt reclamation. ) which would further convolute everything.

But Boris definitely skipped the waiting list and that's honestly more enraging to me

It'd be pretty trivial (if one were a rich/powerful oval office with access to waiting list skipping and a full choice of ENT specialists) to get a medical note saying that cocaine was used as the local anaesthetic for the sinus surgery due to an allergy or availability or none of your business it was a medical decision.

Which then runs into the problem that you can't test for the illegal use of cocaine.

(Or more likely he can just say 'no' and face zero consequences, but it's another example of why drug testing is usually bullshit.)
