It absolutely won’t, but it’ll have places like Defector running gift basket stories guaranteed.

I don’t watch anything that this will cover but these lines are such horse poo poo

quote:

“It’s really the only way the ecosystem will work, and it’s going to work that way for years to come,” he said. “You can’t just be solely reliant on a direct-to-consumer product. That would be a really problematic situation for everybody in the ecosystem, if that’s all you had.

“The real promise of direct to consumer is getting people off of linear analog experiences and onto digital experiences where you know who they are, you have their payment information, and you know their preferences, and you can deliver them interactive experiences.”

Correct, I guess it’s nice to see execs straight up say none of this is about what consumers actually want. It’s about scraping and selling your information.

quote:

Ripley quoted stats that say 60% of 18- to 34-year-olds either bet on sports or are interested in doing so. “Way less than 60% actually watch sports in that cohort,” he said. “One of the problems with that cohort is those that are interested in sports, aren’t actually watching the games — they’re watching highlights afterwards. The conundrum is, how do you get that, translate that interest, interactivity and sports betting, into actually game watching.”

I wonder how much “way less” is. I know that people like this exist I just can’t believe it’s that high of a number, though I guess I have no idea what the average baseball interested consumer is like.

Anyway I hope they lose a ton of money on this.

If they could give me EVERY Bally+ market for $20 a month that'd be appealing. Watch me some out of market basketball with local commercials.

Last time I had NHL Center Ice, I don't think it cost that much. And that's exactly what it gave you. All games (except your local blackouts) and usually local commercials.

Well NBA league pass gives you that except you don't get your local teams and there's no option to add that in. So if they can give me the Timberwolves + whatever other Bally teams (even though that's not everyone) that would be more interesting to me than League Pass.

It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

I don't think there's a league out there that lets you watch all games with zero blackout restrictions. I wish they did, but they're all still tied up too much with the various cable stations that air their games.

Not in the US, but the US is also unique in having so many local TV deals. And things like League Pass/NFL GamePass overseas provide you everything live, no blackouts at all.

Some teams on MLS Live a few years ago didn’t enforce blackout, only when there was a national game on ESPN was it not available. Very glad the new incarnation under Apple will have every game available, but definitely not the norm with streaming.

Specifically, it's about scraping your information to sell it to gambling companies.

To the second point, that is a dichotomy that can't be reconciled. There are some people who like gambling, there are people that like sports and don't like gambling, and there are people being paid a lot of money to try to merge those groups, and that just won't happen.

They used to be with NBC back when NBCSN was trying to be a thing, and it just drew flies. So instead, once Liberty Media bought F1 and the US rights came up, they basically did a time buy on ESPN with minimal effort (using the world feed/Sky Sports UK feed) and sponsorship to make the broadcasts ad free.

And then it got stupidly popular. So this is probably like over-paying a productive player on his first post-rookie contract. They can afford it.

Honestly, it’s probably going to be a good deal for ESPN by the end of it. Ratings doubled last season and are already averaging 50% higher this season.

Miami did 2.6 million for the race and a hair under 1 million for qualifying.

I don’t know if espn had a hand in that Netflix documentary show but I know a ton of people who got in to F1 through that. Great timing if they didn’t.

They didn’t, it just lined up well. Liberty gave ESPN the cut-rate deal because of relationships amongst execs (of course), and Liberty was also smart enough to think the Netflix deal wouldn’t be a negative, at very least. Not sure they can claim they knew it’d be as huge as it’s become.
