If you so much as lightly criticize car culture or suburban sprawl, you hate the poor and are a bad leftist because some of them need cars to get to work.

People can't conceptualize the idea that poor people needing cars to get to work is a very specific and intentional kind of violence inflicted on the poor.

love being in the Midwest, seeing a 120 car train packed to the gills with 15,000 tons of coal rumble past, and knowing that a single plant will burn that entire train in a single day. Also every ton of coal produces 3.7 tons of CO2 lol.

Modern infrastructure is basically designed in a way to make you think that everything is absolutely fine right up until the moment it fails entirely. Water is funny because there's no one in the US that's prepared for a legitimate and ongoing water shortage or even real scarcity. Water problems mean "you can only water your lawn once per week" and not "you can't take showers and may have to wait in a line for drinking water."

also not optimistic about all this making it to 2030. even without bc you've got political and economic stuff happening to wreck poo poo too.

Most people are probably going to slowly bake/disease/starve to death under an increasingly fascist apparatus till some cataclysm (natural or otherwise) comes for their corner of the world. Each year, month, week, day getting more stressful, harder and generally worse. We're not "lucky" enough for a proper apocalypse I think, just a steady increasing grind.

the trick is timing everything to convert cash/etc to useful things before cash becomes useless

I read this thread and believe it but we still had kids and I still put tax deferred money into college funds for them as well as funding a (matched) 401(k). Notably the college money can also be used for tradeschool, so in some of the "pretty bad but not yet End Times" scenarios there's a world where maybe they learn how to do some useful poo poo to maintain all the electric/water/etc infrastructure that's going to be increasingly prone to failure at a national level.

Or we cash it all out and pay the penalties and just buy a pile of black rifles and fertilizer supplies to help the mutual support networks we're involved in (which might include useful things like black rifles and fertilizer).

how's that grain situation going? solved or are we down to 9 weeks supply?

No links to fancy papers in Nature or Bloomburg articles just feed store chatter, but it's probably a good time to explore vegetarian cooking. Price of grain and fuel is going nuts, farmers aren't rebuilding their herds after selling most of their animals off last fall. Fall 2022 is going to be interesting if you're a meat counter regular.

Price of layer mash (=chicken food = eggs) in some areas has increased 4x since winter. Don't even ask about hay. :suicide:

The cold wet weather here has been good for spring mushrooms. If you leave Angel Wings too long before harvesting they become infested with little white worms about 1.5 cm. long. Perfectly edible (and tasty), you just have to turn off the part of your brain that objects to vermicelli fragments having eyeballs. Might help to put on some Anthony Bourdain for inspiration.
