Oh poo poo; they're coming to Chicago in August with the Biths and Courtney B. If I had made it to Chicago Theatre in January during loving Omicron I would have seen The Biths and Courtney Barnett and Alvvays each twice this year.

Late opinion, but gotta say first track of WE by Arcade Fire is a highlight. "Age of Anxiety I" is a peak that sadly the rest of the album doesn't reach again. Particularly the guitar riff that shows up halfway around the 2:50-3:00 mark that almost sounds like a synth

It's better than their last two, but they have Weezer syndrome where they write overly earnest songs without much depth. I always found Creature Comforts from the Everything Now to be unlistenable because of that. It just sounded like a middle-aged guy trying to sound hip by talking directly to the kids.

They've pulled back a bit on that. And you get some good stuff, but then you get stuff like Unconditional II where I'm left wondering what exactly are they saying by "You can be my race and religion."

I think a lot of We is directed at Win and Regine's kid so it makes a lot more sense. It feels like, with the world going to poo poo, it's basically a reckoning of bringing a child into the world (both with depressing and somewhat-hopeful lyric turns here and there).

I think with Arcade Fire, they're victims of their own success. They were indie darlings who created a beautiful, near perfect, first album, and gave legendary live performances. The perception of them changed though when they reached mainstream recognition with their Grammy win for The Suburbs. For many fans who had been with them since the beginning, particularly those who tend to reject things that receive mainstream appeal, nothing Arcade Fire did after that would ever really be appreciated again.

If any other band was still putting out good albums 2 decades into their career, this sort of dialogue simply would not be happening.

I think also, because Arcade Fire was THE band for many people who were in their early 20s when Funeral came out, people go into new Arcade Fire albums wanting to feel like they're in their early 20s again, and when it doesn't hit like that, they get upset.

The strangest thing about We is on the other side of things, with everyone talking about how it's a return to form, a return to their roots in terms of sound. But it still has all the Afrocaribbean beats introduced in Reflektor that people hated so much at the time, and all the synth disco sounds introduced in Everything Now that people hated so much at the time.

Basically, people hold Arcade Fire to unreasonably high standards that they don't really hold really any other band to.

I honestly just think it's that they lost the special touch, which is fine. Part of it may be the nose up hipster rejection narrative, but more so I think they just stopped making as good of music overall.

I listened to Everything Now more than We... We was so forgettable right away and I found it very hard to connect. I have a young child too.

I think Lightning I and II and Unconditional I (Lookout Kid) stand up there with some of the best songs they've ever written.

Did they have a daughter while they're still young? I know they wanted to hold her hand and show her some beauty before this damage is done. But if that was too much to ask, maybe they were sent a son.

WE isn't bad, it's just rather mediocre

it's fine for what it is, and it doesn't have any duds like Reflektor or Everything Now did, but a lot of the lyrics are going to age really badly, and apart from The Lightning, they really don't have any other all-time bangers on there

poo poo, as bloated as I found Reflektor, it had more great songs on there than WE has on the whole album, what with Normal Person, It's Never Over, and Porno being among my all-time favourite AF tunes

I cannot get into a single one of their songs. They are all just such a boring uninspiring drab. I mean tons of goons love 'em so I know I'm an outlier. But there's just... nothing fun there. Like a technically competent band that can't write a single ear wormy hook or melody.

Yeah it is very good. I think the best songs on their previous albums are better than anything on this one BUT this one is way more consistent. Sideways in new Italy had five songs that I loved and five that I’m good never hearing again.

And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye

And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.
Arcade Fire are just like most bands in music, they released good stuff and eventually creatively they faltered. It might also be I'm a lot more forgiving of them as I think The Suburbs is better than Funeral. As we get old and die their later output will be relegated to lost memories, like every Stones album after like 1980, or the entirety of David Bowie's output as Tin Machine and from Lets Dance until 1. Outside, or the four The Cure albums that have been released since Wish

Reflektor had some good songs, but it was terribly mixed, sounding really blown out, and most of the songs went on for twice as long as they needed to. If someone went through and tightened up the songs and actually mixed it pretty good, I think it would be a good album. But as it stands, I just get fatigued listening to it.

Everything Now was where they became a self-parody. Win started writing songs that had good and important messages, but they felt very generic and lacked any introspection or emotional depth. I mentioned Creature Comforts before, but it's a great example of that style of distorting song writing they adopted. It comes across with the weight and gravitas of the Choose Life t-shirts that Wham wore.

At this stage, I'm comfortable treating Arcade Fire like I do Weezer or Smashing Pumpkins. Maybe there's the occasional good song to come, but by and large, they're done and their initial works are all I need from them.

Tonight is a bad album. Blue Jean loving rocks hard, and Loving the Alien is good, but the rest is just him trying to phone in a few hits.

1967 is okay. But it's clear he hasn't found his voice. The Deluxe Edition with the non-album singles is essential. He really comes into his own with Let Me Sleep Beside You, London Boys, and the Laughing Gnome.
