For the G Body ones I expect people to buy them, see how much of a pain to work on they are and then sell them again. Just in that perfect era of vacuum everything with electronically controlled carbs.

The G-bodies are prone to rust too. I don’t think I’ve seen one on the road in ages.

Dad did this a few times after he retired, didn't make a lot but got to drive and work on nice old trucks. He'd find them in TN/NC/GA and sell in WI/MN.

In the north, cars rust from the bottom up. In the south, they rust from the top down. Down here in Florida, El Caminos were particularly popular with pool guys, and suffered hard when the inevitable chlorine spills happened. It tended to rust the tailgate and bumper clean off.

It's awesome, but not half a million awesome. Make a homologation series and let me buy a WRX with an actual race bred motor and chassis in it. Subaru has fallen a long way.

Except . . . this isn't Subaru making it?

I get the value point but that's true for every restomod. You're paying a huge premium for a modern version of your dream car, which already has a high starting point because for any car for which a restomod is viable you're not the only one for whom it's a dream car.

They made 25 of them. They don't exist as anything other than rich people to embezzle money into and make posters with. These cars basically don't exist to the vast majority of the human population.

I have no problem with something both being a Veblen good and awesome. I see you disagree. There were, what, 400-some original chassis to begin with? So a significant fraction of them are now updated.

I'm just saying that this representing Subaru doing something interesting seems true until you consider how many people will be affected by their existence. At least when I had a Diablo poster as a kid, you could just go out and buy one assuming you had the resources. As with any growing car brand, they're in their identity crisis phase. They can either embrace offering something different or just become another SUV factory. I think we can see which way they're leaning.

Had I the means, I'd sooner have one of these than a faster much more expensive cookie cutter hyper car. I mean all your Koenigsegg and McLaren's are cool but honestly I can barely tell them apart.

I agree with the comments on the tweet above about the wheels being too big though. If it's necessary for the brakes I guess it's ok, but asthetically it's the only thing I don't love about that car

That sounds like how bummed out you are. First of all, you probably don't want to speak for what I've driven and secondly it's up to you if you want to be depressed about things existing that you can't personally have/use/touch. Seems like a pretty awful way to look at life.

In that first photo with an actual race car wearing appropriate sized wheels and meaty rubber it just tells you that these were made as museum pieces which may get the odd tootle to a car show once a year.

/\/\ maybe. But there could be one or two of the 25 that just love the concept and want to drive the gently caress out of it. I imagine with such a tiny production run there would be some sort of vetting process

Okay I never said what you've driven, I said if you haven't driven one by now you never will. I stated what is observably, measurably, true. If the truth depresses you that's your baggage, but it doesn't slow me down at all.

I would just like to add here that one of the Ford Escort rally restomod projects (Mk1 I think) that a friend is around is currently on hold because the old fuckers designing it want to put in a shitload of too-modern kit (think touchscreens and associated toss), are doing dumb poo poo with the drive train and have realised how insanely expensive the project is (mainly because of those dumb decisions) so it's currently shelved.
