I remember one time, several stores ago, that we received a call from one of those conex container rental places. Apparently they'd picked up a 40' box that we had been renting that we said we no longer needed, and discovered when renting it to a new customer that it was still full of boxes of clothing. A year AFTER they had taken it away from our store. So our store lost a 40' conex full of apparel, stacked literally floor to ceiling with a narrow walkway down the middle, and just.... didn't notice for an entire year. Probably because that was a year when literally every store in our market was packed to the gills with apparel that the buyers had bought a crap ton of, and that nobody was buying. I'm sure our manager was happy it was gone.

Today at work we had an OD in the men's bathroom. Front end has to check the bathrooms hourly and sign off that they're clean. Person who was checking them found a guy face down on the floor. Leaders were notified, bathroom was blocked off, cops and EMS were notified. Shortly before the cops and EMS arrived the guy bolts out of he bathroom and out of the store. Bathroom search revealed a recently used meth pipe.

God drat that brings back memories of working produce and constantly being told to fetch items from the mystical land of the back. So its cool that I have my own version of people saying "And I want it fresh". Alright dude, do you want your frozen chicken patty from the box with the expiration date of 7/23/24 or the other box with the expiration date of 7/23/24? Its loving graveyard, do you think we just have 1 of everything made on standby throughout the entire night?

Last year: "Oh god there's no one to replace me at my role if I take time off of work. Please, please, please train someone to replace me, I want a break..." Now: "Why the gently caress did I tell them that? I want to see the chaos unfold if I take time off of work..." Everyone's taking time off right now (they're giving free time off like candy right now) and that includes me. Suddenly Operations is panicking and I had to train a 4th replacement because I took one night off, and one of my two primary replacements also took time of to hit the beach with family (ruining his image of "never takes time off" in management's eyes). Basically the list for this job goes me, Grumpy Oldman/Ex Marine and both have started to actually take time off now and then. After that there's Grumpy Problemsolve Lady who's in a completely different chain of management and is well known for burning her time off left and right to come in late/leave early. Then you have to start digging through "People who did my job 3+ years ago but don't have the permissions in the system to do it anymore."

We have inventory coming up in four days and the store is still a mess. Product we received last week that still needs to be pushed, clothing piled everywhere still, backroom pulls that still need to be pushed, and we're still planning on receiving more product until the day of inventory. Also gently caress people that talk loudly about their personal affairs on the phone in the break room.

At Amazon we have these "InSTALLment" (they're in the bathroom, get it, stalls guy! Stalls!) pages that tell about events and whatever poo poo corporate or local management wants to tell us (they're actually semi useful for upcoming events). There's also cookie cutter statements from "customers" cheering us on. I actually bothered to read one of those statements and laughed. Something something "you're all doing so good! I hope you hard workers never change!" Lady (if you are a real customer and not just a person internal PR made up), we have 150% attrition. Much like how you can never cross the same river twice, you can never order from the same Amazon warehouse twice.

The InSTALLments are only half that, the other half being actual local site news. Also believe it or not, the bathrooms (at least at my site) are super clean and well taken care of. No Wal-Mart bathroom here: cleaned 3x a shift. Then again we're like a 20 minute drive from that super-massive Buc-ees in New Braunfels so I guess management has some sort of inspiration. Had one of my more unpleasant experiences last night. Had someone just demand I give them an employee discount and I refused, which made them decide to be the biggest pains in the rear end possible. They paid with a hundred when I saw there was enough 20s in their wad to cover the bill, but joke's on them I had a bunch of 20s in my till at the time. Then they wanted every loving sauce and after all this then they start going on about how the soda tastes bad. I checked the back and no, the soda was correctly set up (and I tasted it after and it tasted like soda). I offered to give them another soda and of course they wanted a shake. I told them I can't upgrade them to a shake for free and I'll need another 1.50 for it. They take so loving long to come up with 1.50 even though I gave them a few ones back as change from their 100, that I was able to take 4 other orders. And after all that they wanted the shake extra thick (so hardly any milk, meaning I have to sit there grinding frozen ice cream), just to make it an even bigger pain in the rear end. Oh and they didn't even give me 1.50, they gave me like 1.38. Admittedly my only other experience being cashier was being the guy who would take over a register to cover a break but I'm astounded by not just the amount of people who do it but also the brazenness of demanding discounts/freebies. Also how aggro they get when I don't feel like giving someone I don't know free poo poo. One guy just told me "give me another" when I handed him his drink and I told him that is gonna cost money. Then when I came back with the food and asked if they wanted any ketchup he just started going "everything, give me everything!". Or someone who told me to just give them a free shake and when I said no and they paid for it started demanding I put "hella cherries" on the shake. We don't do the cherry thing here.

So in our store, our suppliers set up a number of their own displays and storage sections. Over the last week, two of them have collapsed, spilling 100+ kilos of product down from a height of about three meters. Thankfully no one was there to get hurt when it happened, but it happened in a completely abandoned corridor, so there was no way it was someone poking at it that caused it. The supplier in question has insisted that it's not their fault, despite this never happening anywhere else in the store in like seven years.

We are down 4-6 drivers, though my manager, in usual manager speak, says we are not down any drivers because she is checking over the market and where we are and where routes need to be moved for max productivity. Speaking of, she says my productivity has been low for...a few years now. Oh, really? Something that my previous managers didn't say? Something that is out of my hands and control, windshield drive time versus actual delivery time? We don't even have dispatchers anymore, just software that randomly sends us all over due to special math we cannot understand. What I do understand is it makes gently caress all sense to have people drive 30-40 miles to pick up an order going a mile down the road...then sending people from that range 40 miles to the first area to deliver poo poo a further 15 miles north. She also says my orders running late are not due to me starting an hour later (most orders are input 8am-1130am pickup window, delivery by noon) but since I start at 9am now, all my noon orders run 30-60 minutes, or more, late. It is a mystery.

Its great when it suddenly gets busy for no drat reason. No holiday, no festival, on a thursday night. Just constant flow of people. There is a second person with me until 12:30 and usually they will take the orders while I go and do things that requires me to get my hands wet and covered in chemicals but I couldn't do that at all last night cause of how many people were coming through. I was convinced there was a festival or something but no, even at 5 am we were having a shitload of people coming through. Did the other fast food places in town just shut down last night? Besides that, a lot of people lately trying to redeem coupons but without the part of the redemption where they hand the coupon over. "Do you want me to tell you the code?" No, I want you to give me the coupon. Its not a pamphlet of secret code words you tell the cashier to show that you're part of a secret society who buys one gets one free at a burger place, its a voucher.

I remember my first job working at mcdonald's, one of the new employees was the niece of the manager, and while the girl was nice enough, she could never understand why most of us didn't like her. And that was of course because she never had to do any of the extra duties no matter where she was because the manager was her aunt. Example if I was in the back Booth of drive-thru, I had to do the dishes, get the trays ready, clean the trays off, make salads, etc, while taking orders, making change, doing all the usual back Booth stuff. She had to...only take orders. Not even out of real register that could take money. If I remember right she didn't last long because she didn't like the job in general.

Had to deal with someone who couldn't believe that ordering a large meal, a medium meal, 2 kids meals and an extra burger ran 41 bucks. Argued with me for a bit and then had me read back everything with their price. Assuming that single burger was going to someone who didn't want fries and a soda and not going to one of the other meals, you fed 5 people for 8 bucks on average that you didn't even have to prep, cook and clean after yourself. You know I never thought the thing I'd hate the most about California summers isn't the 110+ weather, but rather that it makes everyone flip their schedule 12 hours so I'm just non stop busy all shift. Like to the point where even with a second cashier doing the drive thru I still can't get my cleaning done cause I have to hop over while one of us takes orders and the other handles the payment and having to make shakes. God the loving shakes is another thing, I get people showing up at 5 am wanting shakes. I can see why McDonald's never wants to fix their ice cream machines. I have started to develop a sixth sense in knowing someone will order a shake (They go "um" when I ask what they want) and would yank one out of the freezer tray and throw it on the fry holder to soften the ice cream.

I stopped into my old work Mcdonalds (I quit 2 weeks ago now) yesterday on my way home from new work and I could barely find anywhere to stand on lobby it was so immensely rammed. Naturally I was gracious and not at all smug about how none of this was my problem any more, except for how long I ended up waiting for burger. On the plus side at my new work I got to see a middle aged man getting very excited about finding a proper round bottom wok which lifted my mood immensely. On the down side I'm realising how poisoned my brain got by how long I was at Mcds, I started to tell a customer he could move down to the second window when I was done and had to really hope he didn't notice.

I work at the anti-post office now. It's weird that I'm being trained to direct callers to certain departments within the agency and not being expected to know everything. Like I get to tell a taxpayer on the phone to cut it out or else I'm ending the call if they give me any poo poo. No summoning management if I can't handle it myself and get snapped at if I do.

Reminds me of the summer when I worked as a cashier at a Walgreens back when they still had real film departments. We had a one hour photo machine that was finicky, and at least one of the managers was happy as hell whenever it was broke for his shift. I managed to get myself banned from using it because I filled the developing chemicals wrong, so the machine was down for a day or two while it got cleaned out. The store manager was pissed and tried to get me to put the blame on the manager that hated the thing, but I kept telling the SM that I just was trying to be helpful and got the bottles mixed up. I didn’t realize it at the time, but the SM was totally trying to either get the manager written up, or possibly outright fired. I can’t remember what made me reflect in the store manager pressing me so hard about the regular manager’s involvement in my screwup. I also learned in my short time helping out occasionally in photo that the instant camera capacitors hurt like hell when you discharge them on the palm of your hand. Nothing like a little mini Taser to make you hate your day.

Warehouse manager managed to, in the span of three days: Harass one employee into just completely ghosting the company. Not responding to any calls, hasn't called in sick, nothing. Harass another employee into deciding to retire rather than staying on at low hours, and on his loving birthday even. Harass a third employee into looking for a new job. I hate that man so much. Our last warehouse manager wasn't great, but this guy is just like working for an insecure teenager. Can't communicate without screaming and wailing, everything needs an instant response, completely incompetent at everything he does, literally yells and screams at people just because they don't reply to him in the exact tone of voice that he wants.
