Possibly it's just Halloween and M’Benga is being appropriately metal about it?

Pike and Ortegas are having too much fun. lol even La'an's dog has an outfit.

Hey, Hemmer is still alive and around. And also having a blast.

Haha M'Benga's daughter is shipping chars / writing space fanfic.

That was a nice, bittersweet ending. I'm glad they wrapped up that plotline but idk it seemed too soon and a bit unsatisfying. Still a really fun episode.

I'd be lying if I said my eyes weren't wet when it became obvious he'd leave the daughter behind. I'd be lying if I said it didn't get worse when she came back to tell him he did the right thing.

Decent episode but I had a couple of problems. Firstly, the incredible closeness to "gently caress yeah science" or "I loving love science." Any time something resembles Discovery writing, I start to recoil like I smelled vomit.
Secondly, I don't know what combination of director/editor/cinematographer/showrunner caused it to happen, but there were a lot of really lovely cuts in the episode. The fight scenes had 400% more cuts than necessary which made none of the action look cohesive and there were numerous times where someone was making a face or looking in a direction and the next cut had them giving a different expression and looking in a different direction. This must have been a really rough episode to produce.

I want to know what M'Benga's face looks like shaved. He has the most intense cheek bones I've ever seen and I bet he's an Adonis w/o the beard.

It was nice seeing everyone stretch their acting chops a bit but Anson Mount ate every loving scene he was in.

Edit: gently caress, I was right.

That line was a little cringe, but it was worth it for Hemmer.

Carry On Pike was pretty fun, but I think I preferred how Spock/Uhura/Ortegas were playing the whole thing completely straight. You have professional star fleet officers pretending to be fairytale characters, you don't need jokes on top of that, it's already funny!

In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one sat.

He chose the path of perpetual contentment.

That episode was amazing. It felt like some unused script from TOS that got dusted off and a few details changed.

I'm glad they resolved the daughter in the buffer plot because it really tied the writers' hands to never be able to have the ship completely lose power or suffer major systems-wide failures. It did feel like they sort of speedran that plot thread by having three of the first eight episodes directly relate to it.

As much as I absolutely love the serialized plot of later DS9 whatever allows SNW to continue having stand-alone adventures without ten minutes of "previously on" is okay in my book.

That was one of my favorite Trek episodes of all time. I usually don't really care for the weird "stuck in a fantasy land/holodeck" type episodes, but this one was just so good. The crew hamming it up was amazing, especially Pike, you could just feel how much fun he was having. It seemed like everybody was on the verge of laughing at any moment and I really really hope we get a bloopers reel of this episode as I bet it is epic.

Best Trek show since TNG by far.

They managed to balance broad comedy and tragedy while tacking it to bizarre sci-fi shenanigans (is this the first Boltzmann Brain in Trek?).

I was glad to see a little bit of wiggle in Hemmer's antennae, but I wish they were as expressive as they made them on Enterprise. They were always squirming all over the place in that show... animatronics? I'm glad to see Hemmer isn't just a curmudgeon but he has a fun side, too.

Yeah, this is why I had to give SNW a 5-episode berth before judging it. Discovery did this for at least 2 of the 4 seasons (S1 and S4) and Picard S2 as well, with LD doing the opposite and being middling for the first 2 episodes before finding an entertaining groove in episode 3. SNW broke the mold on new-Trek's opening episodes feeling disconnected while also breaking the mold on live Trek's opening season feeling poorly made. It's a miracle.

...though thinking back to it, I wonder whatever happened to Pike's girlfriend? Practically everyone on this show has amazing chemistry with each other and that included the 1-scene-wonder of Pike's friend. Think we'll see her again before the season is over?

What an absolutely exceptional episode. This show owns. Glad they got some good quality time with Hemmer on this one too, although I do echo the sentiment that Enterprise's Andorians were and still are the best looking version of that species, largely because of yeah, the antenna movements they did really accentuated Shran and company's expressions.
