Watching the Patreon version and for some reason one of the plays is urban Robin Hood but also Prince John is Ace Ventura? Also Robin Hood is Michael Jackson (also a white guy)

That was the part of the video that baffled me the most: Who is the audience Jamie Oliver thinks he's speaking to that he has to repeatedly emphasize that you should add salt to the water you're boiling pasta in? Who are the people he thinks are going to recoil in horror at one of the most simple directions for cooking pasta?

my mom lol

It took me a while to convince her that salt wasn't the devil and that if you use it right while cooking it makes things taste very good and not "salty"

The problem, at least from my perspective, isn't in him mentioning to salt the water. Basic tips like that are fine, especially for a video like this where the premise is providing tips on how to better cook a relatively simple thing. What throws me for a loop is how much he emphasizes that adding salt to the water is okay, like there's going to be some viewer who immediately thinks he's a heretic for suggesting it. I'm just so confused at what segment of his audience he's thinking of that would object to the concept of salting your pasta water?

I’ve known at least one person who was proud she didn’t salt her water so, y’know, her.

The cringe in this is deep. Very deep.

EDIT: This video is reminding me of my history of theatre classes, where we learned that the first theatrical performances were religious rituals. Now I'm wondering: if we were somehow able to travel back in time and see one of those original productions, would we realize that it was all just a bunch of ancient Greeks cornballs doing schtick while the audience rolled their eyes and politely clapped?

Trip Report: This one is a ride. Both my partner and I saw cast members we went to high school with. The plays are cringeworthy but they also have extreme Winnipeg energy so it's an interesting watch for locals.

For the explanation of some of the local humor Jenny didn't get: Altona is a small town outside Winnipeg that's predominantly Mennonite. Low German is a dialect spoken among Mennonite families in the area. Mennonites are also pacifists that were conscientious objectors in WW1 and 2. There are a lot of Mennonites in Manitoba so the jokes are pretty universal in Winnipeg.

These plays are huuuuuuge moneymakers for the church with all the Easter donations they get.

Yeah, Allison is pretty deep into the revamp of Baywatch Nights where all of a sudden a mysterious stranger shows up and starts giving Mitch and Ryan spooky cases.

the teague era of baywatch nights is incredible. there's an episode where an evil magician uses a demonic staff to create magic wind that makes everyone hallucinate and go insane

then at the end of the episode, teague wants to study the staff and mitch breaks it in front of him, then mitch and abby from law & order make a bunch of stick puns as teague stares dead-eyed past the camera

e: jenny doesn't know what impression the pastor is doing in Toy Story but it seemed very much like he was failing badly at a Jack McBrayer impression

This is basically what happens any time you get people with limited media experience together and have them put on a show. If you want the audience to pay attention, you need either great performances, great technical achievement, or funny jokes, and the last one is the closest they can get to.

ETA: Also from my experience, most of the audience is pretty well entertained. You gotta remember how dire Christian entertainment is. They're used to things that aren't actually that funny.

I remember the first time I encountered that show. I was in high school, and I had no idea what Baywatch Nights even was, and I randomly came across it while looking for something to watch on the 4 terrestrial channels that my country has during the school holidays. I remember thinking "oh, I didn't realise TVNZ had lost the X-Files to TV4" until David Haselhoff suddenly appeared. I hope you can understand just how baffled I was.

The Dark Knight one having Halloween costumes based on the Adam West 60s tv show was amazing. But the highlight was definitely Batman getting crucified over the Bat Signal in front of the theatre where his parents died while a narrator cheerfully gives cheesy rear end lines straight from the show.

Also Butch Chastity is such a porn parody name, I swear, and it kinda owns both despite and because of that.

This was a heavy video, but a really good one, especially with its conclusion of, "OK yeah we want people to stop going into the radicalization funnel, but we're not really offering any helpful alternatives. Let's get on that."

Also cool dude featured in that video, Foreign Man in a Foreign Land, came out with a cool vid on TikTok and its reification of appropriation and racism via the omnipotent algorithm:
