Honestly really love the "what is and what isn't midwestern" conversation because it's similar to people talking about music genres for groups that are really border line.

Although the conversation always seems kind of broad. Like, What does it mean to be Midwestern? What do you do?

(Note, from Los Angeles. And read this conversation a lot with midwest emo, math rock, Minor Threat emo, vs Rites of Spring Emo stuff. )

And then someone with an American Football avatar posts ITT.

I'm fine with defining Missouri as its' own region. It still resembles the midwest more than the plains or the south, though it shares qualities with them. But let me just tack one more nail in the coffin real quick.

the gulf of mexico is part of the atlantic of course

and the great lakes drain into the Atlantic that would technically make them a freshwater part of the Atlantic

and also a riverbank is kinda like a coast so we gotta throw in the mississippi watershed

so with all that in mind a definitive map of the us:

A lot of people just lump the Plains states in with the Midwest and if you do that then you’d say Kansas City is in the Midwest. If you consider the Plains to be their own separate region then you’d call it part of the Plains. Culturally it’s got a lot more in common with places like Oklahoma City or Wichita than it does Minneapolis or Indianapolis.

i think it's mainly based on people googling "is kansas city in the midwest" and the results almost universally saying "yes!"

Here’s how you identify these regions.

The Plains have tornadoes and the locals acknowledge this.

The Midwest also has tornadoes, but they pretend they don’t, with tragic results.

The South also has tornadoes, but no one confuses them for the Plains or for the Midwest.
