Epic question: if you want to take units with Planetfall, you need to take a space ship, right? Also, are there good HH mods for Epic? We're tried the RIP EpicAU one and even Imperium Dominatus, which is more Space Marine than Epic.

I'm a bit confused by the Emperor-class battleships and the Retribution-class battleships. On the surface, the difference is simple. One has lots of guns, one has less guns but lots of strike craft. They cost about the same (345 for the Emperor, 365 for the Retribution), but the Retribution is slightly more expensive. But... the Emperor actually has more firepower, in addition to having more strike craft? The Emperor has two strength 5 front/left/right batteries, and one strength 6 battery on each side - So on both sides, it can bring a total of 5/5/6 firepower at range 60 onto a target. Meanwhile the Retribution has a strength 12 battery on each side, in addition to strength 3 lances in front/left/right. At first I thought it made a huge difference on the gunnery table, but turns out that having one big battery or many small batteries with the same total strength works out to about the same number of dice. The only things the Emperor has going for it is a front armor of 6+ and it's strength 9 front torpedoes. I've only played one game, and that was against myself, to learn the rules, but am I missing something here? Are these torpedoes such a huge deal?

Geisladisk posted:I'm a bit confused by the Emperor-class battleships and the Retribution-class battleships. Yes. To expand a bit more: torpedoes are a big part of the Imperial Navy’s strategy - you can split your barrage to target two separate directions along the arc with the torpedoes to spread it out, and a S9 shot will do a ton to your enemies. Additionally, you can use them to keep your opponent’s ships from effectively dealing with your other ordinance - remember that a ship can only have its turrets target torpedoes OR attack craft during a single ordinance phase, not both. Plus, don’t forget torpedoes bypass shields, and you can use their predictable courses to herd your opponent into where you need them to be.

In addition to what Hedningen said, torpedoes scale better than linearly with more torpedoes. Not only does a str 8 torpedo marker deal twice as much damage as a str 4 marker, but it also does a better job of overwhelming point defenses and has a wider marker, making it easier to hit with. Str 9 torps are terrifying. That said, IIRC the Emperor was kind of a one-trick gimmick with the torps. But it's been a long time since I played BFG.

I mean, that wider marker is moot if you’re using the updated ordinance rules that sets all torpedoes to a single 3-torpedo width marker, but overwhelming point defenses under weight of fire is another fun aspect. In my experience, the firing phase is for breaking escorts, and the ordinance phase is when capital ships suddenly get hulked.

E. Nesbit posted:I play a lot of both, and feel that the complicated series of hoops required to put a model down works for Necromunda in a way that it never did for the last edition of Kill Team. The Necromunda ruleset isn't a game so much as a 900 page long misfortune simulator. This is exactly right. Most models only have 1 wound (your star players, the gang's Leader and Champions, generally start with 2, or even 3, as do some special big models, called Brutes, and can even upgrade them by one during a campaign), but when you are reduced to 0 wounds in Necromunda, you're not automatically off the table. You're much more likely to get wounded, or knocked down injured, whereupon you can only crawl around trying to recover - with the help of friendly models you will probably stand up again, albeit a bit more wounded, before the game ends. Of course if you go down injured in close combat, you do get removed as the enemy scrags you! The system works very well to represent these hardscrabble, untrained gangers tearing at each other. berzerkmonkey posted:Yeah, NM is in no way balanced, and, quite frankly, pretty slapdash in general. I like it, but good lord, it's really poorly written and executed, and the rule book situation is a goddamn mess. Hey now, a lot of the detail in Necromunda, stats and equipment etc, is very poorly balanced, and the game is therefore best played with a confident Arbitrator to reign in players who pull too far ahead or consistently make better use of the rules than their opponents. And the way it's scattered across books currently is a real mess. But I think it's going too far to say it's poorly executed overall. The basic structure of the game, even aside from the campaign layer, is very sound.

It really depends on playstyle, Ret was great for charging, Emp for support and long range gunnery. Living rulebook upped Rets batteries to 18 or 16 if I recall, which makes them about equal on firepower IMO. It has been at least 15 years since I last played, but man did I love my retribution battleship. Way more of a gamble, but when it charged well I felt like lord nelson himself with both broadsides blazing.

Well, I played a game of BFG last night. It was a lot of fun! One question: When ordnance attacks ships in a squadron, does the entire squadron get to use it's turrets or just the target?

You could probably go to thingiverse or similar and find people that have made almost exact copies. Then just download the stl and you could get measurements that way too.

In Necromunda, what limits are there on stuff you can give Juves and Gangers from the trading post? Can you give them any item from the categories they have access to?

They can have absolutely any wargear, armour etc that you want, no restrictions. They can only use weapons from their own House list (IE what's on their page in whatever book you're using). I believe there used to be some more finicky restrictions like limiting the maximum credit cost of any single item Juves could have, until they had X number of advances. But AFAIK all that is outdated and gone now.

LOL, Mordheim vampires are no joke. Apparently because the rest of the gang is absolute dogshit. Best bet is to avoid it, play the scenario, wreck as much of the other stuff as you can. Otherwise, crossbows, handguns are good if you can get a shot. Pistols are okay, but if you are that close, you're probably dead.

Don't forget that your opponent is totally aware that the warband's whole value is stored in one model. Making a big and showy enough play for it could force conservative play - and keep the vampire away from anywhere it can actually do harm.

her vampire has a few extra levels under its belt and tbh the warband rating bonus mechanic does not appear to reflect the actual disparity between a new warband and a leveled up one. she gets tired and doesn't read the post game sections usually so im going to load up on rabbits feet and lucky charms and whatever other obscure poo poo i can find in the rulebook she hasn't read. mordheim is as unbalanced as any gw game i've ever played but it's super fun so far.

There's an interview on Goonhammer I think of the lead designer on Adeptus Titanicus who also worked on Necromunda who basically stated that the Necromunda 2018 box was a quick flip of the Shadow War: Armageddon rules. It didn't have nearly the same development time of AT because they thought it would be a one and done box but it quickly became a huge thing. The lack of initial polish definitely shows, and I think with it's release schedule they've never really been able to give it the balancing it really deserves. Still a pretty slick system under the hood.

I ALSO finally got to play Kill Team and man, TBH I really like it. I don't think that could be my "main" game, but I love how fast the thing plays. We were able to knock an entire game out not knowing what we were doing in about 2 hours and that was with breaking for pizza, beer, and to just bullshit in addition to looking stuff up and flipping around for stats. I will echo that the bespoke Kill Teams are better than the Compendium ones though, or at least the Kreigers were better than Drukari.

Kriegers are probably the best team in the game. But yeah compendium teams are kinda butt compared to the fancy teams that have more utility all over the place.

EdsTeioh posted:I was pretty sad that I lost my sniper pretty early on, but man, the sgt and confidant ripped poo poo. Chaotic. You'll need a book for your gang and the core rulebook, at the bare minimum. If you want to run a campaign outside the Dominion Campaign, you'll need one of the additional "Book of..." If you want to do anything Ash Wastes related, you'll need the Book of the Outlands. As a side note, the book that came with the new Ash Wastes core set is not really a complete rulebook - it has some stuff from the core rulebook, some stuff from Ash Wastes, and some stuff that isn't in either (environment tables and other things, if what I've heard is accurate.) Honestly, it should have been a core rulebook replacement, but instead, it's yet another book with maybe a couple of useful things in it, but incomplete otherwise, because you still need two other rulebooks to cover the gaps. It's loving frustrating, and I recommend the Yaktribe LRB as an alternative.
