I have a 2016 GTI which I have owned from new. On cold days when I park it up there are wisps of steam coming out from under the bonnet, sorry, hood, and a smell of coolant. I’ve had VW check it out three times and they can’t see or detect a leak and the coolant never needs topping up. The temps are always fine as well.

She’s now got 67k miles on her, it’s an odd thing.

A bit of an odd question, I've got an 09 MK5 Rabbit which was right before the MDI port became a thing. I've still got a iPod port in the middle console. And well as you might expect I don't run an iPod in 2022 (I mean I have one but I'd have to refurb and rebuild it). However, there are bluetooth to 30-pin adapters out there, but, there doesn't seem to be a lot of info out there as to which one would happen to work and some suggest that they don't work in cars AT ALL. If you happened to have grabbed one that had worked I'd be interested to know about it, I'm not adverse to installing a new stereo in the car, but, my work schedule keeps me from daylight hours so it's pain to do lengthy car work.

Took the wife's 2013 Passat TDI SE to the shop to do the timing belt, went well but discovered the water pump had been seeping from the weep hole, so glad we did it even if the belt still looked good.

Now at least we know when both the DSG and the Timing belt was serviced so we can rest assured it's good for a long time.

Was also super loose, so bearings were no doubt on their way.

Can just barely see the streak down the inside of the timing cover.

Right now I’m leaning toward 15” in silver (the car is forest green, with tan soft top, everything about it is/will remain stock).

Bilstein B4 or B6?

I’m assuming former since it’s for my mom+dad to tool around in, but the car is kinda boaty as-is.

FCPEuro says B4's are equivalent to (new) OE quality, so that's what I'd run with: https://www.fcpeuro.com/Volkswagen-parts/Cabrio/Shock-and-Struts/?year=1997&m=20&e=975&t=5,6&b=10&d=350&v=12

Also, for any 2014+ 1.8L and 2.0L water pump failure people, there is a class action lawsuit: https://waterpumpsettlement.com/

Nothing you need to do if it hasn't happened yet. But they do cover a repair for up to eight years from the in-service date with sufficient maintenance paperwork and so on.

So, no sooner had we done the timing belt when the wife's Passat TDI decided it didn't need boost anymore.

gently caress. Towing it to mechanics now. Verified the N75 and the Turbo actuator are moving fine, which means its internal to the turbo or the DPF is fully clogged (which I suspect it is not because it idles fine and starts fine)

So I got my slow coolant leak checked out on my 2015 TDI SportWagen and it was found that there is a high likelihood it is the water pump, they say. After a pressure check it was a slow leak of 2 PSI over an hour, with droplets found under the harmonic balancer.

Only thing is, they want to charge $1600 to do it (this is a specialty mechanic) and then also claim the timing belt should be replaced (they say every 60k miles, but I looked at the VW schedule and VW says 130k). If I add that, it's now up to $2200.

This seems like a rip, so I am also going to price check from a dealership mechanic. Thoughts?

Call a couple different shops and ask how much a timing belt and water pump replacement is. Different vehicle but I was able to provide the parts ($200) and had it done on one of my vehicles for about $500. Really depends on the engine config (transverse vs longitudinal, aka how it's mounted and how big of a pain in the rear end it is to get to/replace) though.

Thanks. I was looking online and parts seem to be between 150-250 depending on brand and sourcing location. I would think labor is what, $80 an hour or whatever for two techs over the span of most of a day? I can see $600 as a price point, but literally double that seems high as gently caress.

You don't pay MSRP for parts from a shop, you're paying a markup.

I said check out https://waterpumpsettlement.com, but you’ve got a TDI. Whoops.

That said, you’re underestimating labor rates in my experience. Most shops here are $120 an hour or more. Please feel free to shop around though.

Haha yeah, my phone was setting it off on the drive home until I buckled the passenger side belt. Hopefully my Obdeleven has a code loaded up to disable the chime altogether.

- DPF and Catalytic Converter Delete
- Retune the ECU to support it
- Injector upgrades to provide enough fuel

Which engine are you looking at? Biggest thing with the TDIs is knowing how they've maintained it and how its been worn in. Highway driven TDIs tend to be in much better shape than TDIs that were driven city majority.

I'm currently fixing up the sportwagen I've driven for the past year (tie rods, ball joints, struts, tune-up, tires) to hand down to my family, felt it was only right to pass it forward.

You beat my posting efforts by a mile. For you, I don’t know that I would exclude yourself from the settlement though. I would say that if you don’t claim reimbursement costs, and it sounds like there are none to claim, then you should qualify for one replacement in the extended warranty period should you need it.

That’s an optimistic reading, and IANAL, but I’d stay in the settlement unless you plan on suing them yourself.

The VW EA211 engine in my Ibiza has a timing belt and its replacement schedule is 6 years or 120 000 km. My 6 years are now up so I started to look what it costs. My current place (authorised service) suggested in spring that there might be a discount campaign so I shouldn't book the job ahead of time, however that turned out to be a miscommunication.
They wanted 1300 EUR: 900 for the belt job, 200 for new plugs and 200 for the long life inspection service. I shopped around, if I went to another authorised service 150 km away they would do it for 1160 EUR but having to take a day off work and travelling there and back would eat the savings.
So I turned into unauthorised services specialising in VAG cars, local place would do the job for 950 EUR but I found one place near my parents who will do the same job for 600 EUR, so that's worth taking a day off and bringing kids to visit their grandparents :v: They will use otherwise OEM parts but the belt is Continental's (who also makes the VAG timing belt).

Also, Skoda Fabia (which has the same platform, engine and parts) timing belt change on an authorised service: 545 EUR. I asked would they do the belt on my car, they responded they have their hands full already which I think is code language for "we don't take cars from another dealer network" as Skoda is represented by another dealer than other VAG brands.

Finished the turbo replacement on the TDI Passat, its back to normal, did a bunch of cleanup on the backside too and cleaned the NOx and Oxygen sensors, hopefully that'll keep that pending NOx code at bay, and ran the EGR and Turbocharger adaptation programs on them.
