A bit of googling says that "Lazy Lions Ape Club" was a rugpull, but Lazy Lions is still plugging away. There's about a billion variations of Lazy/Bored Apes/Lions/Both NFTs so some of them are bound to be rugs.

I'll hazard a guess, that one reason is because a lot of Asians like gambling and are thus susceptible to the appeal of crypto bullshit. (See the giant casino industry in Macau, gambling on mah jong in Hong Kong etc.)

it's a lot riskier to be from the united states when your business is breaking united states securities and regulatory laws

hong kong, singapore, etc are all well enough linked to the global financial network you can do this sort of stuff (compared to, say, mainland china or russia) but also have a lot of friction between a US regulatory agency getting mad at you and something happening to you

China dows have some weird industries built to avoid formal gambling regulations, like one where you put bids on rough jade boulders with only a tiny piece of the jade exposed, with a setup essentially structured as gambling but with the cover of just being a gemstone auction.

I wouldn't be suprised if some habitual gamblers were using shitcoins as a different workaround for antigambling laws, they definitely are in the US states which ban gambling.

Before China banned cryptocurrencies it was being used to get around currency controls, mainly the $50,000 limit on taking money out of the country I believe. Before that the hot thing was to launder it through casinos in Macau where they were still legal.

Mexican meth too.

I forget the exact details but it basically goes you buy a boat load of chemicals in China, arrange shipment to Mexico, and your agent on the other side takes possession and sells the chemicals to the sort of people who want specific bulk chemicals for reasons we won't ask about.

There's a bit more to it but the tl;dr was that a fair number of down payments in Vancouver were coming via a link that involved the cartels.

Rotten Red Rod posted:

Agreed. This is unquestionably its worst episode though, and kind of the death knell. It was a really weird listening experience for me, as I kept expecting a heel turn where they revealed how insidious the whole NFT and crypto scene was, but the host Anna genuinely doesn't understand crypto and seems to actually kind of think it's fun and neat.

Oh, and there's a REALLY weird part where Anna blathers on about how incredibly rich Alex Goldman is and kind of seems to float the idea that HE could just buy the NFTs back for the listener. It's bizarre.

Is it worse than the episode where they interviewed a guy with a secret hair growth formula, who refused to discuss or describe it in any way and spent the entire episode hemming and hawing? Absolutely infuriating.

Literal hockey bags (lol) full of cash showing up at BC casinos (which are controlled by the provincial government!) and they just said "ok"

A big report came out last week on it and the best the previous government officials could say is that they weren't outright corrupt, just incompetent as hell.

Oh god I forgot about that episode. I must have blocked it out, or maybe I usually skipped the listener question episodes. I think that guy had mental issues. At least it was only a 3rd of the episode and not the whole thing, and was just one crank listener calling in rather than the actual show creator being grossly negligent and misinformed for an entire produced show.

the best part is the "the crypto industry is presently witnessing a slight collapse" right under the pic

A "slight" collapse. Just a little one, as a treat.

Also lol at this "slight" collapse being one that's wiped out about 2/3rds of the nominal value of this poo poo in the last six months.

Oh and let's also just ignore the 95%+ collapse in what NFTs are actually selling for.
