Perfect game to release a few weeks before Elden Ring.

I only play like two, maybe three, games with any regularity because my life is busy. I think I saw the graph where I played Destiny 2 (my main squeeze) for a whopping three hours at once, with 0 hours spent for days either side. Clocking up 1000+ hours is not something I've ever done, but I stick with games that are familiar and fun, and I don't have the time to chase every new shiny that comes along. So I just play two or three for honestly a few years at least, with mild divergences into some fun small games. I think I spend less time playing games a week than the average length of a pretentious video essay on video games. Edit: saying that, I also really like video games and think they rule.

The only games I played more than a thousand hours I also leave running for super long times. FF14, for example. Most of that is spent keeping it up in the back waiting on queues to pop, and Total War Warhammer 1/2/3 which is mostly spent hitting “end turn”, browsing the forums for 5 minutes, then playing my turn.

Harrow posted:It's "normal" in the sense that it's relatively common, especially for people who have like One Game they ever actually play (which is relatively common with more casual gamers). It might not be common for someone to stack up 1000 hours of a game in a year but there are plenty of people who've played that much LoL or something over the last decade and barely ever play other games at all. This gets even more common if you count things like FIFA which technically releases a new game every year but is it really a different game for anything other than "give us more money" purposes? Also p sure it's incredibly common for Minecraft and such

You definitely see different habits from when you're a kid playing whatever's available to you depending on what your parents buy or what channels you have access to, then a teenager with more agency and incentive to figure out how to pirate while also near unlimited free time, and then an adult. Also reminds me how achievements caused game publishers to lose their poo poo for a generation with how few customers actually finish games, and so they made games try to drag you to the credits by any means possible.

I'm starting to really get into heroes of the storm, it's a shame they haven't bit the bullet and made all the hero's free because running about a moba as Diablo or Tassadar is pretty cool

Yeah when you forget about microtransactions, dlc, constant re-releases, assassins creed games, mobas and the Nintendo switch then I guess acheivements are the worst

What’s so bad about cheevo’s exactly? They can be fun little challenges to beat, or you can ignore them. They don’t affect the gameplay in any way. It’s like complaining about high scores. If you can’t enjoy Galaga because AAA and rear end have higher numbers than you that’s your problem.

I think the inference is more not that it's about Achievements per se but publishers getting real weird ideas from seeing metrics of how people apparently play games and its possible connection to how the Xbox 360 ushered in basically a lost decade for game design.

Achievements arent the main source of developer info about games now a days. Remember when companies released death spots that killed the most players or what choices players made at character creation? Thats the tip of the data iceberg TBH achievements are really useful to your competitors looking to figure out interaction with your title since thats public facing data

the 360 era being a lost decade for game design is a terrible take. games changed so much from the start of that gen to the end, for the better. especially multiplayer gaming came on leaps and bounds throughout. yeah it's easy to just think it was all a bunch of grey/brown third person shooters but there was so much more than that going on lol.

I'm a little fond of the grey and brown games. It never took anything away from any game I've ever played, and in many instances lended a lot of character to some really pretty world. I'd actually say I even have a bit of nostalgia for it. NieR Replicant is very much greens, greys and browns and I just found it a really relaxing world to be in.
